Does What You Believe In REALLY Matter All That Much???

    Some beliefs matter; I believe if I jump off a 200 foot cliff, there is a 99.99% chance I will die.

    I prefer not to learn through trial and error if I can avoid it and learn from other people's errors.

    Beliefs matter if they are founded in fairly demonstrable facts/evidence and they prevent hurt and harm to yourself and those you love.

    Or do you just mean religious beliefs.

    Many are not "religious" yet they have a core of beliefs. Ultimately, what difference does it make after we're dead? Are we in soul sleep? Are we maybe going to heaven? Should we be afraid of Hell?

    What I believe in does matter to me though I no control over events.

    Oh, are we discussing beliefs we hold when we are dead?

    I'm only worried about erroneous beliefs I hold that might make me dead faster than I want.

    Blondie;

    How about eroneous beliefse that affect your quality of life while you are alive. eg. Are you happier? Is this a waste of time? etc.

    I just wanted to say I liked your comments. (Some don't quite apply to Chia - her dad is not and never has been a JW and has been separated from her mom for years). However your thoughts regarding keeping a menatl note of our contact with our JW family, but not in a judgemental way was useful for me. I do wonder quite often if I could actually cope with having them back in my life after all these years and my fairly new resentment. Before - I thought they were right so I could only be angry with myself. Now I think they were wrong and am a bit angry with them. But thats an aside ...

    just wanted to thank you for your well thought out and gentle non antagonistic advice .

    Rod, I have been filtering and re-checking all my "beliefs" for the last four years. But not just my religious ones. We make decisions with the best information we have; everything is fairly subjective too depending on the information. Except for that 200-foot cliff.

    I judge people based on their behaviors, who do they associate with? And how they treat me and people who are important to me. I give zero weight to motive and zero weight to professions of belief.

    It's now that really counts. But many live now and do things now because they believe their future will be affected.

    Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a gift, that is why it's called the present.
