Oh yeah the WTS is like a military junta promising they need to establish a temporary government of true revolutionists to restore order and democracy (or to lead me into the "New System of Things").
And then you realize they're just like Fidel Castro who still considers himself to be the leader of a "transitional" government. LOL.

Yeah, I am not a JW, but I definitely have that rebellious streak that refuses to go along with the program.
I think that was the major attraction that I share with my JW husband. Both of us are decidedly contrary. Each in our own way, we buck the trend and kick at the traces. I just happen to think that mine is more radically contrary than HIS choice.
Ah, well. At least my marriage isn't boring.

I can relate, IP. I always felt as a JW I was in the spiritual elite. What reinforced that attitude was how easy it was to demolish people in religious arguments and leave them in a crumpled heap. People don't get much practice in defending and attacking beliefs like the JWs do three times a week. It made me feel smug. But then I met a person who felt equally elite to debate me consistently and with just as much enthusiasm. Slowly but surely he demolished my faith in the Watchtower chronology and that's when my whole smug religious structure started to tumble.

IP, you nailed it. When I joined I felt that I was escaping the "normal people borg" and joining a fantastic rebel alliance that saw through it all and took no part in it.

They get people to feel negative towards the world implying that they are above all its untoward forms but they are no better, they just pretend to be that's why so many left their ranks.
