¡Oh, no eres tú mi cantar!
    ¡No puedo cantar, ni quiero
    a ese Jesús del madero
sino al que anduvo en la mar!
    Antonio Machado

    Tentative translation:

(Who will lend me a ladder
to remove the nails of Jesus the Nazarene?
    -- Popular
    saeta [Andalusian Holy Week song])

Oh, saeta, song to the Christ of the gypsies
Always with blood on their hands, removing the nails!

Song of the Andalusian people, who every spring
Go asking for ladders to climb on the Cross!

Song of my country, which throws flowers
To the Jesus of agony -- it's the faith of my fathers.

    You are not my song.
Neither can I nor will I sing
To this Jesus of the Cross
But to He who walked on the sea.

Thank you Ronald for your concern and eloquence. However, I for one do not feel it necessary to reduce the source of this infinite universe down to a finite anthropomorphic deity so that I can have title and feel safe and special.

Could it be that the true God is so great that it can not be owned by an exclusive club or religion? Could it be that the true God is so unconditionally loving and present that ultimately everyone and everything is divine and included in God's Kingdom? Of course a limitless and boundless understanding of God, such as this, does little to bolster support for you idiosyncratic group and your particular deity.

That said, it is likely your heart is in the right place, and that's always sweet and welcome.

I didn't look, I didn't read all the original posters thoughts, I just wanted to say James Thomas, YOU ARE the MAN and you replied with finesse and class.

I admired the other posts as well.

The beautiful thing about the picture is that it shows what Jesus Christ did for you and me.

Maybe for you but not for me. I have yet to see any substantial evidence that Jesus even existed.

Please don't presume to speak for me.

If you want to believe in fairy-tales and superstition then that's fine but don't tell me that I'm supposed to believe something that there is no evidence for, or in fact, what there is strong evidence against,

Over 2000 years ago God came from Heaven to earth in the person of Jesus Christ and took the punishment for our sins(wrong doing).

If you do believe in that ridiculous fairy tale, you're wrong.

God sent his son, Jesus Christ, to Earth to die for our 'humanity', for some sick, sadistic reason. If this BS is real, I didn't ask for this horrific sacrifice, nor do I want it. God could have forgiven 'US' (another word for two five thousand year old apple eaters) in a much more loving way.

The whole thing is sick, and I want no part of it.

Are you reading Machado at the moment, Narkissos? This is the second time in as many days that I've seen you quote him.

BTW, I decided to google Machado to find few more of his poems, and the first site I found had ads from public-records companies offering to help me find Antonio Machado.

Not especially, those are old memories (probably one calling back another). But he's one of my favourite Spanish poets anyway.
