P.S. I said that I went to Akaka Falls when I was a little kid and that I hope you enjoy yourself there, with such a beautiful land, sea, and water....

Billygoat.....There are some nice laidback elders there, but I have also known the strict COs and DOs who tried to keep things in line. Still, it is interesting that we were treated as a separate "land", as not part of the US in the KMs and the assemblies. Remember those talks by Brother Abraham Lincoln?

Leolaia - thank you for the translation.... I got Akaka keiki aina and aloha....but that's about it! Hawaiian language seems to be more and more prevelent over the last 5 years since I first visited. I'm pleased to see it.

Hawaii now has a bottle bill.... 1 cent for funding per bottle, 5 cent deposit, and using recycle centers instead of grocery stores. I like it! They will take other recycleables too. Since we're from Oregon with so much recycleing (Washington and Cali too) it's nice to see it developing here in the islands.

We're really enjoying living here. We finally went over to the other side of the island N of Kailua Kona, up in the Kohala, N Kohala area a couple days ago. Otherwise we've been spending most of our time on the E side of the Island.

Following 2 pics are Kevan in front of Geranium bushes at the forest ranger station on Mauna Kea at 6,600 ft - near the pass of the Saddle Road that goes over the pass between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. The other pic is of Mauna Kea from the same spot. (Remember it's 13,900 ft high, so we were less than 1/2 way up.)

The food is great! Unfortunately, I've found I'm allergic to Taro leaf. Dang - I love lau-lau's (taro wrapped meat - slow roasted for hours). The fresh tropical fruit is awesome. Papaya 4-6 for $1 Pineapple $2.50 Mangos - yellow kidney (Manilla or Phillipine or Champagne are also names for same variety) for $2 per pound. Sushi the other Japanese food influence is really good. Ya know, there's a musubi sushi that uses spam? It's very ono - tasty.

That's my travellogue for this week. I'll check back in later.

Hugs and love and much aloha!

    Enjoy your trip!

My family's going to Hawaii in November, and they're not taking me . (they're going to stay at a 5star Hilton too, and I've never been on a plane).

It's all good though. Have a great trip!

    My bi-weekly check in.....

Hawaii is here, wish you were beautiful!!!! erm... yeah.

We have <2 weeks left and I don't wanna! Whaaaa. Looking at property. Man - the last 1 - 1/2 years the values here on the E side of the Big Island have BOOMBED! We looked at a 1/3 ac lot in a very nice neighborhood with a badly termite infested house... a fixer downer, for $225,000 and it's sold. It was a beautifully treeded lot in need of a nice house. Anything we like is now over $500,000. So much for retirement here. It has me really depressed because it's that bad in our home area too.

Today is Market day - fresh papaya, mango, pineapple, and veggies. Yum! I've really gotten into island-style cooking: One night large pot of rice to go with whatever dinner, often Katsu chicken, pork, or fish (japanese style breaded and pan fried) with steamed veggie, cabbage salad. The next night is fried rice. Fresh fruit and pastry fro breakfast. Making lots of banana bread! Yum. Its' been rainy, sunny, overcast, downpour, cool, hot. Hawaii!

    But........ I miss youse guyse!

Biker, Odrade, Low-Key, YES we'll have a deck party when we get back. Our house/cat sitter is currently breaking it in for us :( But be prepared for Island Style Grinds (eats) As I'm on a roll here. Laulaus and Kahlua Pork! Yum.

    Hugs and Aloha Nui Loa!

Sounds like you are having such a lovely time!

I visited Ohau many years ago and loved it. Wish we would have been able to see some of the other islands too.

It's too bad the property prices have increased so drastically...that has to be discouraging.

    Enjoy your last two weeks!
