It's all about putting emotional distance between the JWs and the rest of the world to build that invisible wall to shut them out from the rest of mankind.
A lot of the things the pagans used were just universally valid psychological symbols that anyone could have used, eg the pagans used frankincense and so did the Jews and the Christians (the prayers of the Saints).
