It's great to see the responses and the common threads. The "careful what you wish for, it could be worse" is a bit of rational egoism that I really understand. That's my main objection to the folks at RCP (that and inforced economies, but that's on another issue). Namely, their concentration on violent upheavel.
And revolution usually hasn't made a difference. Hehe. That's why I used to say "Communism is a game for atheists to play before they die."
On an interesting note, it's fun to look at how the context of looking at things is decisive. My views on what seems necessary, reasonable, or even possible have vastly changed after leaving the WTBTS. No more simple answers.

I heard similar sorts of crap about Ronald Reagan in the early 1980s - how dreadful it was that he stengthened the military and faced down the USSR with the able assistance of Margaret Thatcher . I think George Bush needs a third tem in office

No chance - if I get killed for stating what I believe - so be it - remember Ronald Reagan - if he could have stood for a third tem he would have got voted in - but he was a hardliner who was not frightened to make tough unpopular decisions. Same with Margaret Thatcher - prepared to take tough decisions some of which were unpopular

A hardliner to make hard decisions? Reagan?
Yeesh. A brilliant man with an astute memory for the Iran Contra affair (good thing Bush is still covering for him), slandering a real hero like Nelson Mandela as a terrorist (still don't know what that means), tap dancing across tax structure for the quick fix, bottle-rocketing the national debt... Russian Imperialism as a wolf in sheep's clothing ended itself, serving as a straw-man for opponents of communism who demonize the party. Good thing Thatcher supported him, he didn't know anybody else's name.
Yeesh. Reagan. F^$#@ Reagan. Tyrant and fool. Let's make all celebrities into political figures. That way we at least get a good show, and T.V. guide can be a lot thinner.
