An aside from any disagreements above ... I would like to put physicians in a different category than drug companies.

Drug companies are all corporations, which are inherently sociopathic, and physicians are not. They have their good, bad and ugly, just like every other profession, and should not be likened to a corporation. Unfortunately, that can mean life-or-death in the medical professions, and I think that's why folks are so passionate about this subject.

As for the crystals, they also contain possibly harmful chemicals, just less than many other products. That was my only point, along with my personal anecdotal experience. Why do I think I no longer get painful cysts in my armpits? I feel that refraining from shaving my arm pit hair is the most significant factor. The crystal may or may not contribute, use of it does reduce the amount of chemicals absorbed into my body.

And yes, Robyn, I agree - companies are capitalizing on this. If a person wishes to buy these products, I say research the company first, and buy from the least environmentally destructive and most consumer-friendly source. It is most often the same.

Jim I am painfully aware of what goes on in a ER ward. However, you point to a valid problem. Have you ever found out how many of those "patients" in the ER are uninsured? In many big cities the unisured rate in the ER approaches 50%. They flood the ER because they didn't want to go to the family doctor sooner...thus it then becomes severe. You are living in Texas...in 2003 (and I believe it still holds true) had the highest percentage of uninsured IN THE COUNTRY at 30.7% of all adults and 26.6% of working adults. ER's and ambulatory services are a safety net and often the place of first resort for health care for America's poor, uninsured, and illegal immigrants. (There is an interesting study done for the state of Texas I've listed at the bottom if you are interested.)

Jim let me ask you this....Could the business you work in survive if 35% to 50% of your customers didn't pay you for your services?!? ER's cannont turn away people who can't pay. Could your business survive if you were mandated to do this? I think not.

FYI: Nationwide the wait time to see a doctor was unchanged since 2000, averaging 46.5 minutes. Overall, visitors spent an average of 3.2 hours in the ER.

Your post **They really are a bunch of rabid, money hungry dogs. I'm so glad I got out of it.**

Perhaps you are jaded and embittered by the medical community. What is your axe to grind? Call it a hunch...but I think you are not a fan of the modern medical profession. Care to defend yourself?

    Yes, let me "defend" myself.

First off, I'd imagine someone that is a "doctor of neurology" would fully read my comments before they commented. If you read back, I was NOT commenting about the medical community. I was commenting on the pharma industry. Two totally different things. At least to someone that is truly familiar with the medical community.

Secondly, I'm not jaded or embittered by anything other than people that misrepresent themselves. My axe to grind? People that lie. It's pretty simple. Considering that most of us have come from a high-control cult that has lied for years, I'm sure you understand the sensitivity to that.

Regarding your inability to quote the source, how hard is this:

    "Blah, blah, blah".

Sorry I can't attach the link, but I got this from JAMA whatever edition.

Yeah, that's real difficult. As a doctor of neurology, I would imagine that you would understand the importance of at least LISTING the source, even if you couldn't link it via your Mac.

For anyone else that seems to think I'm being a bit of a hard ass, let's take a look at EF's latest threads. If you google the first line in his thread and put it in parentheses, you'll notice that *gasp*, almost every one of his latest threads sounds strangely familiar. Has he ever cited the authorship as someone else? Let's see...

Yeah, thanks I think I'll pass on these snoozers. If you look at my threads nowhere in them do I say "HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS". Most of all of those came from the pages of New York Times Newspaper. Usually they are 2 internet pages long. I post the 3 or 4 highlight paragraphs out of them to start a discussion with. Hmmm, you think I'd quote from the largest circulation newspaper if I was trying to steal credit from them? You don't think those same stories were picked up by AP/UPI and posted to dozens of other newspapers? You think people actually thought I sat around with my thumb up my butt picking this stuff out of the air? Puleeze! (And the HIV thread wasn't mine and the posts in there are footnoted for your viewing pleasure my dear.)

But maybe I'll just stick to comments like you make so as not to run afoul of your literary genius.
***Hey, fellow Dallasites. I'm sorry we can't come see Badger off. If we get a chance, we might do a pop-in, but we've got family in from out of town that we've already made plans with. Elsewhere, your smoked stuff sounds fabulous! Badger, take care of yourself, hon. We'll miss your sweet mug.
    ***Happy Anniversary!!

But Scully asked me to provide quoted links earlier today and I said I would in the future no problem.

I also agree that the pharmaceutical companies are not to be identified with the medical profession though they try to influence doctors to promote their drugs (eg cholesterol lowering statins commissions given for putting patients on them).

The pharmas are among the most profitable companies there are, Billygoat thanks for the insider info on their real character.

One additional thing to keep in mind...if you are going to demonize "big pharma" I hope you don't have any of their stocks in your 401K, IRA's, or stock fund holdings? Hmmm......
Of course drug companies have their share of blame. But patients are just as guilty as drug companies when they go into their doctors and demand certain name branded drugs.
It's like the folks who demonize big SUV's and the Enquirer. Somebody's buying it. The drug companies are providing a drug people want to buy. Do we need 3 errection meds? I guess if the market will bear the costs of 3 drugs the answer is yes.

Also...let's not forget who else makes money on selling drugs. Look around the pharmacy next time you drive by one. On one corner their is a CVS and right across the street is a Walgreens, and possibly a 3rd one all at the same intersection.

    From :http://investor.walgreens.com/ReleaseDetail.cfm?ReleaseID=167148
Walgreen Co. Reports 20.1 Percent Earnings Increase, Record Sales In Third Quarter 2005
DEERFIELD, Ill., June 27, 2005 - Walgreen Co. (NYSE, NASDAQ: WAG) today reported 20 percent earnings growth for both its third quarter and first nine months of fiscal 2005. This was achieved while opening 85 new stores in the quarter. Walgreens operated 391 more stores at the end of the quarter versus a year ago.
Prescription sales, which accounted for 65 percent of total sales in the quarter, climbed 14.0 percent. Prescription sales in comparable stores rose 10.2 percent in the quarter.
Gross profit margins were up 94 basis points versus the year-ago quarter to 27.85 as a percent to sales.
We had another terrific quarter with improved gross margins and higher than expected prescription numbers and non-pharmacy sales," said Chairman and CEO David Bernauer.

Well, Dr. Evil, you may not realize this, but my sensitivity is not fake. You don't know me other than what I've shared on this board. Unlike you, I've been here for several years, met many of the people on this board. Talk to anyone that's met me and they'll tell you that I'm pretty for real type of gal. Literary genius? Probably not. Honest? Yes. That's where you and I differ.

We all come to JWD for different reasons. I come to share my thoughts because it helps me heal. Your purpose here is obviously different. It makes you no better than me, it's just different. In the end, Truth comes out. Just remember that.

I don't think so ... informed consent ... the drug companies have it,, the general public does not ,, my opinion is, they are the same as the tobacco companies, amoral and sociopathic.
