I almost bought a US flag yesterday but then got to thinking it may stumble some of the active JW's I have been witnessesing to. I decided against it for that reason alone. I have my Sunday Worship clothes all pressed and ready to wear to church; red, white and blue polo and white cuffed pants.
Just curious

"it's funny because today is Canada day, and people here don't even think about stuff like that (for the most part)... i think it's because 99% of our population truly does love the country we live in, and we're secure enough about it that we don't have to display it the way the americans do. does that make any sense at all?"
Yeah, Bethel. It makes a lot of sense. I wish all Americans felt the same way about our country.
I'm very pro-American, and I fly my Stars And Stripes every day of the year. -

Mrs. NeonMadman was never a JW and has always displayed the flag at this time of year. It's flying outside the house as I write.

I'm still working through this.
Growing up, my father was nutsy about the 4th of July. We had a flagpole in the front yard and displayed a flag everyday, but on the 4th he'd run up this extra big flag, put flag decorations all around the roofline of our wrap-around porch, and get the stereo speakers placed carefully in their outside locations so he could blare John Philip Sousa marches throughout the neighborhood. We'd go to the local parade, then the family and neighbors would come over for a big BBQ, a trip to the local park to view the town fireworks, then back to the house for our own firework display. It was obviously a very big holiday at our house.
I went from that to full-stop nothing...don't own a flag, don't stand up for a flag, no singing the Nat'l Anthem, no saying the Pledge as it's all evil nationalistic worship and an insult to Jehovah.
Right now it's a big deal to plan to go see some fireworks and watch Music Man when I get home. LOL

I have mixed feelings about patriotism. There are so many people who elevate patriotism to worship. While I personally value freedom granted to my by this country more than I ever have before, I am not pleased with the way some of our political leaders use patriotism in a fashion similar to the way JWs used their Bibles. The world doesn't need more excuses for oppression and it seems that since 9/11, patriotism has been used in such a way.
However, we are going to celebrate Independence Day this year, complete with fireworks and a BBQ, but without a flag (of course, we live in the middle of nowhere, nearest neighbor's house is 3-miles away so no one would see if we had a flag or not). Independence Day this year means so much more because of our fight for freedom of speech (Rocky was DF'd for speaking about the Silentlambs issue) and our consequent independence from all things WT.

I've always been patriotic since I left. Big time party at the lake, flags everywhere. When both wars in Irag broke out I had good friends there, and still do. We did the ribbons at the house and on the cars.
What really freaked my mom out was when I had my fingernails airprushed with a flag in the background and an eagle on the tips. They were really cool!

I just removed my Bush bumper stickers about a month ago...didn't want to be one of these people who keeps them on the car until the next election.
