Just curious...."service, and gas money"

Locally on occasion it was the common practice when "in service" to leave gas money for the driver. I know that the individuals if savvy can get a tax credit for mileage for service (and I was once told mileage to and from public talks could also be included). What I am curious about is do people still give the driver money for thier trouble? Especially those who are chronically unable to drive themselves. In the territory I used to be in it was not uncommon to drive 100-300 miles if out all day, make that 3-4 times a week and look at that gas bill, not to mention wear and tear on perfectly good vehicles.

Or are witnesses too inconsiderate to do that anymore?

I remember giving a $1.oo in the morning and another george for the afternoon to the driver.

Afternoon service in the summer ugh... So hot, so lame.

I hated taking my vehicle on the FS, everyone would trash it, leave crap all over the floor, hardly ever got money for the fuel but at least I was helping those who hadn't the means to transport themselves, I mean the lazy idividuals who didnt work fulltime, so couldn't get a car, but just bummed of those of us who after working all week, would then waste our precious weekends dribbling crap all over the country side. AAHHHH!

I never gave anyone a dime. No one ever gave me any gas money either. I am sure my dad must have slipped some money to the pioneers now and then.

Never personally gave money, though I remember some people "helping" the pioneers out with some money for gas etc, being they usually had no job, or a really poorly paid one.

We were always giving people rides in service. Nobody ever offered to help with gas money. It was always "next time, it's my turn to drive" and then they'd conveniently not show up for service, or arrange to be in another car group. Even when we chauffeured the District Overseer and his wife in service, it was as though they felt entitled to be driven around and have coffee break provided for them.

When I was single, though, it was considered almost offensive if a Sister™ (like moi) drove the car group if there were able bodied Brothers™ with vehicles. On those occasions, I would leave gas money. I always did it discreetly though, because the Brothers™ would try to save face and decline. So I would slip a dollar bill into the Brother's™ bible when he wasn't looking.

Don't know about now, but a few years ago when I was still in the old rich bags in the cong never used to compensate all the young, polite poor pioneers for fuel and wear and tare on their vehicles. Used to always give me the craps that my housemate and longterm friend used to regularly put up with this shit. I had a 2 door car, so despite my offers to use it was rarely taken up on it, so dumbo considering there were 3 perfectly good seats in the back?!? frog

I rarely gave money for gas, although I knew it was the right thing to do - because I didn't have any. I was a housewife and my husband had a succession of low-paying jobs, because why? Because we believed what the Foolish and Dimwitted Slave told us about the spiritual dangers of college degrees, real careers and two-income households!

And I rode around with my fellow cultists trying to convince innocent worldlings of the selfsame crap!

I resented breaktime, too, because I couldn't afford any damn donuts, either.

I remember this slightly older then me regular pioneer had a van, and considered herself the 'paragon' of what young people in the hall should aspire to. So when it came time to split up into car groups she always spoke up first to claim everyone bwt 13 & 19. Then before she would even put her key in the ignition she would come up with a random figure of how much gas money she wanted from each us. Usually bwt $2 -$5 a piece! with 6-7 people in the van she always had a small lunch at break time instead of us poor suckers that were stuck with pooling our remaining money to get a pack of timbits!
