It def goes both ways bad employers and employees. In all fairness my father who is a jw employer tried to treat them all fairly, thats not saying the direct supervisors did.

As for: My husband and I are in the process of opening a small retail business and I so do not want to have to hire any jws. Isn't it legal to discriminate based on one's religion? I hope to be able to screen people discreetly so as not to get into to any trouble about this.

The simplest way to get around that is make sure they'd have to work meeting nights or something, require working of hours jws hate, that should make them self screen and not take it or corrupt thier spirtituality

Btw it could be considered spiritual harassment if a jw boss witnesses to an employe, so if an employee were to be caught witnessing on property you could bring up discrimination to those of other faiths I imagine.

Thanks Carol I know the ramifications of using illegal bias in hiring people. But this I will be able to do once we open shop - use lots of holiday decorations!! Do you think that willl ward off the jws?

It's a violation of federal laws to discriminate against anyone based on their religious beliefs. You can have them sign an affidavit that they will not shun, harrass, ignore, or otherwise discriminate other emloyees or employers who were once JW's at your place of business. There are many exJW's that are finding their work life difficult because active JW's who are employer/employees at the same business follow the demands of the WTBTS and daily expose them to unimaginable harrassment, ridicule and scorn. I am a contractor with a Seattle based company and have endured all kinds of demeaning treatment from active dubs who work for the company.

Be very discrete when interviewing...the JW's seem to know all the rules, regulations and angles of "ceasars's law" and use it when it is to their best interests.

    Carol

They will lie or bend the truth a little on their applications, I have seen this first hand.

This is easy and you don't even have to ask anyone about any religion... just ask them if they can work late on week days. If they mention tuesday and thursday nights, BINGO.

The Watchtower Society doesn’t hire Jehovah’s Witnesses - it owns them, that is the way to get cheap labour.

If you look around building sites you will often find an unwanted Jehovah’s Witness on a skip in serviceable condition. Take it home and clean it up - no hire fees!

The JW's at my workplace let everyone know that they are willing to "take the sacrifice" and work through statutory holiday time, especially around Christmas.

I have worked around them and can tell you that they can be bad news. First of all, they lack education and that is bad. Secondly, they have a bad work ethic (they really don't believe in it but just tolerate it to pay bills). Third, they have no sense of loyalty to an employer (not in the least).

The third reason is probably the worst because it can cause trouble for an employer when a confidence is violated and the employer is open to a lawsuit. For example: a dub who worked in a hospital or doctor office and found out someone in their congregation had an abortion, etc. and they went and reported that person. They would have no compunctions about doing this because their organization wants them to do this. They are oblivious to consequences.

I wonder if a law were to be passed on this issue if it would stop this problem?

Dragonlady...that's what I meant about using "ceasar's laws"

Mrs. Jones....I think the decorations are wonderful....also be sure to ask for Birthday's (not the year, just day and month), so you can make sure the "sign" they're born under is compatable with the rest of the employees!

Carol ( of the I'm getting sooooo wordly class!)

    Carol:

I love the "sign" matching idea that alone may make them think theres demons at the place.
