Hey all. I promised I'd tell you about my holidays visiting my non-JW brother and his JW family.
The first thing I noticed when we arrived was a whiteboard stuck to the fridge. It seems the rest of the family decided to follow the Family Schedule found in the TMS. I looked it over and all there was on the board was school, homework, study, and meetings. There was no mention of recreation on it. I asked my brother about it and he said, "They don't even follow that fvvving bullshit." Not only is my brother cool, but he was right. The schedule didn't even get looked at.
All throughout my stay, I was surrounded by JW literature. It was everywhere, including the room we slept in.
We arrived while the convention was on. Now, I really don't want to see my niece and nephew stick to this religion, so I made it a goal to show them the exit door, but not tell them that it was the exit door. On Sunday when they got home, I asked my niece, "So, how was the drama about Timothy?" She asked, "How did you know?" I simply replied, "The Internet." Hopefully that sticks in her mind.
One comment that my nephew made to us was, "I have this disease called ADD, and I'll have it until Paradise..." You know how sick I felt? Not just because of what he said, but because I couldn't do a damn thing about it.
All throughout my stay, I was browsing JWD. My nephew seemed interested, and I read one post here about a child with ADD who had their spirits broken (sorry, can't remember who wrote it). I'm hoping that my mentioning the internet and being on it will help them do some research themselves when they're finally allowed to use the net.
As for my sister-in-law, she's run into problems. Her mother turned her in for smoking and got put on reproof. She also got councelled about going to a sex toy party. She said, "It's none of the elders' damn business what I do with my sex life!"
One rule my brother has in his house is that NO JW CRAP will be discussed in front of him. When they all went to study the Watchtower, they went downstairs and closed the door.
All in all, I had a good time, but it was those little things that really brought me down. I hope, just hope, that my niece and nephew will become curious about what's on the internet and look it up themselves someday.
