    hey all

am new here, am the sister of a minister of the JW in ireland, and also the aunt of 2 lovely nephews soon to be baptized into jw's faith!! we've tried for years to make her see sense and leave the JW's but it doens't work!! anyway there was a convention here at the weekend in ireland and when she came home from it, she contacted a few from the family to warn us about armegeddon, and that the end is very near! and something about the UN being part of it!! this was prob a big topic of their discussion at their convention on Sunday!!

I would like to know from some of you, what made you leave the JW?

ALso, one of my nephews is coming up to the age of puberty (sorry don't mean to get too deep) but i am afraid of how she is going to approach the time in his life?... she has changed so much, and doesn't make any decision without searching the bible first!! and i'm just too afraid that she'll say some awful things about sexuality to him, when infact its only normal and natural at that age?

any help, answers or information is greatly accepted!!

    thanks in advance

    Dorie

    Welcome Dorie

    the end is very near!

Really? Again? I heard this as a child, and I am now quite elderly. MY end is more imminent.

As your sister (? Minister?) is interested in the UN, there is PLENTY for you to talk about there

It is very sad that to hear that your pre-pubescent nephew is being baptised. The Society condemns infant baptisms, yet are willing to baptise 7 year olds (as read on another thread) - they'll be chucking foetuses in the baptismal pool soon.

I don't know how much you're aware of in the Society, but there is PLENTY of information on this forum which I hope you will find useful.

    Please stay. Regards. Midwich.

    Welcome Dorie -

Sorry for what you are going through with your sister- I know that can be hard. Unfortunately, people who are deeply indoctrinated in a cult generally won't listen to reason. They are conditioned to reject anything that doesn't follow what they are told to believe. Stick around and read for a bit and you will find some great information that might help you out with this.

Hi Dorie- Welcome to the site!

armegeddon, and that the end is very near! and something about the UN being part of it!!

They have been saying this for decades! The end is always near, and despite secretly being associated with the UN, they are more or less in cahoots with the devil.

Im sure you will find all the information you need on here.

Hi Dorie, Sounds to me like you're going to have a hard time with your sister. There is nothing new in the JW's predictions of the nearness of armageddon...they've been doing it for the psat 100 years or so. I was 16 in 1970 and there was a lot of talk about armageddon then. I, along with the rest of the JW's were convinced that armagedon would be here by the mid 70's...it didn't come Oh well, I knew it would come quite soon after that because they had said for decades that the generaton that witnessed the events of 1914 would still be alive at the time of the end...guess what...they've revised that docrine and thrown out that viewpoint.

I became really digusted at the way the organization played fast and loose with what they call truth. They have past truth, present truth, old truths, new truths...when really what they have is a record of failed predictions and a long string or revised beliefs which they call new light from god.

The organization doesn't want its members to think too much for themselves. They are a high control outfit. often times when people look closely at witness history and see a pattern of deception they leave. One way they counter this is to get peple like your sister whipped up into a state of frenzy about impending doom. I'm afraid there's nothing new in this.

I wish I could say there was an easy fix,but there isn't. I have similar situations with many of my family too. They just don't want to see the JW organization for what it is..a smoke and mirrors act. often they are afraid to leave because they have it drummed into them that if they go they will die at armageddon too. I hope you can get your sister and nephew to think for themselves, but remember they have been warned to avoid independent thinking and those who promote it. good luck

hey, and thanks for the replies....

when she started on about the UN, and that it says it in the bible! i was like "where in the bible does it say anything about the UN" and she proceeded to open something that said about the Wild Beast, how did they make that connection???.... if you could tell me how they were secretely connected (jw + UN) just so i can say that to her, next time she starts at me with her verbal diarrhoea!!

We still love her and will always stand by her, but as a family we've stopped discussing religion, but anyway getting to the reason why i feel i need to post, because they were told the the end is near (i know they've been saying this for decades, but i get the feeling something was announced at the weekend)... she has no interest in getting him to study, or work hard at school!! keeping in mind he's 11 and can't subtract?... thats not good!....

BTW, after our heated discussion, she went home and told my mam, i'm a staunch catholic!! and HEY i'm proud of it!

if any of you have some websites that will give me some info..... or whats the best way to navigate this site, any topics that might be of interest to me?

If you don't mind also telling me, what was the turning point in making you wan\t to leave this cult??

cheers again, really appreciate the replies....

JWs are quite capable of keeping up that frenzied mental state of "Armageddon is definitely coming this year for such-and-such a reason" year after year after year. It's amazing but true, and every year there seems to be something anounced as especially prophetic concerning the end, but hey, we're all still here right?

There's a "best of" section on the board, where threads of particular interest live. Also, check out the "Links" section, all sorts of good stuff there, check that out. Also, you'll see mention of a book called Crisis of Conscience, written by a former Governing Body (tm) member Ray Franz, which gives all sorts of details about how the organisation ran itself.

*WARNING* if your sister finds out that you've been getting information from this website or that book, it could really freak her out, so if you approach her with any info you've learned from here, probably best not to say you've been on the internet looking on sites like this. Might be better to tell her you got it from discussions with your priest, or you found it out from the library or something.

As for reasons for leaving, there seem to be as many as there are people who've left. There are "why did you leave" threads around, but you might have to search back many pages. They are there however. For some it's the lack of love and compassion in the congregations, for others it's the doctrinal errors and intellectual dishonesty (607bc, 1914 and "this generation", 1975 etc, evolution book, trinity booklet), for others the paedophile cover-ups, for others the UN involvement.

Good luck, softly softly catchee monkey

    ig.

Dorie, first of all I must say how refreshing it is to see the word 'diarrhoea' spelt correctly.

I don't think the Bible ever mentions the UN being the Beast of Revelation - but the Society's publication (Revelation, Grand Climax) does. The WTBTS (Watchtower) preach that it's very naughty to ride the Wild Beast UNLESS it's to obtain a library card (Libraries are also NOT mentioned in the Bible).

keeping in mind he's 11 and can't subtract?... thats not good!....

This is very sad - your nephew is coming up to baptism and he is unable to work out all the false dates for himself, (although any personal study outside of the WT publications is not encouraged - I know this from personal experience). As the Society rely so heavily on specific dates, they should make certain their members know how to arrive at these dates - try asking your sister how she arrives at 1914 or 607, (SHE doesn't and won't be able to tell you) - I imagine her answer will be, ''I DO know but I'll have to work it out again and get back to you''

Only you know what is current with her - your best option is to focus on one or two points and learn them thoroughly - we can help with Bible back up, and what is MORE important, back up from the Watchtower's own literature.

    Best Wishes. Midwich.

Welcome Dorie, there are plenty of websites on the internet that cover just about every aspect of the jehovah's witnesses, just type in your Google search engine, words like "watchtower society" "jehovah's witnesses" and plenty will come up. Almost all are critical of the JWs.

Unfortunately their views on sexuality are victorian.
