Welcome to the forum Dorie!
To answer your question, I began my exodus when they changed the meaning of one of their prophecies - AFTER IT FAILED! Their prediction was that the Soviet Union would overthrow the US in a struggle for power and then the great tribulation would begin. They based this on a prophecy in the Book of Daniel about the King of the North and King of the South. Well, when the Soviet Union collapsed, they did a quick backpeddle in a study article - no apology really just more like, oh, we were mistaken about that .... moving on. I was shocked. But it seems I may have been the only one because as I looked around the kingdumb hall, everyone else seemed to take it on the chin (or maybe they were daydreaming). I wondered to myself, if they were wrong about THIS what else could they be wrong about?
It didn't take long to find out. A couple of years later they relaxed their prohibition on colleg education (see my profile on that) then it was the 'this generation will by no means pass away until all these things occur'. The GENERATION was supposed to be the generation that saw the events of 1914. That meant that the end was very close (yeah, right). The current teaching is some convoluted mess I can't even articulate - but regardless, that was the last straw for me.
You see, JW religion demands a lot from its adherants. As you stated, some parents do not emphasize education because the end is supposed to be so close. But what happens when your nephew grows up and cannot find employement because of lack of formal education? I had to look at the price I was paying to be a part of this religion. If what they were saying wasn't true, and obviously it isn't, then I had to take my life back and begin to make a future for myself and my family. That plus the fact that I was just so damned tired of walking a tightrope for people who didn't give a rats ass about me personally. The burden was so heavy - I knew it couldn't be from God.
I wish you all the best dorie. You are truly a caring individual to spend your time trying to find a way to help your family. Don't give up hope, there are new posters here EVERYDAY who just up and left the religion or are trying to find out the truth about
the cultda troof and make some sort of exit.sweet tee

Good luck, softly softly catchee monkey
Iggy ,leave me out of this ,,lol
Dorie ,if the jws don't constantly preach the end is near they know they will have sheep slipping away and that would be bad for business so they use the warnings to keep the sheep in line with the promise of eternal life and happiness and the alternative of death . It is what keeps the wt going and people in line.
Welcome by the way

Visit www.watchtower.org
You'll only get the negative side of the religion here.
We're a group of 'ex-JWs' or 'fake-JWs' here.

Hi Dorie and welcome.
JW's predictions and expectations are so convoluted I couldn't begin to explain it here. Suffice to say they believe that in 607 BC the Gentile Times began. In 1914 the time of the end was supposed to have begun with the great tribulation having at its climax the UN (they believe it is the beast in the book of Revelation in the bible) destroying religion. If you can get the Witnesses' Revelation book it will explain it to you. Not that you'll understand it! I didn't, and very few of us here could ever make sense of the Witnesses predictions going as far back as the book of Daniel and further, and I'm getting a headache remembering the rest. Us here on this forum at one time or another all waited for Armagedden. The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society kept changing the dates on us. AND, that is why I left. Along with the fact that too many questions addressed to one of their explanations is viewed as virtual heresy.
Good luck
Hope I didn't confuse you more.

JWs are only a religion among thousands in this world.
They have good, bad, and ugly.
I choose to accentuate on the good, most days. Others accentuate on the bad and the ugly.

I'll just paste in what I wrote yesterday...
I grew up being taught that the end of this system was just around the corner, and so it wasn't worth getting an education, or making long-term plans, so I never did and floated for a long time. Thousands of people can relate to that feeling. I noticed that most witnesses go through a bit of reading material, parts of which they do and don't accept, other parts they don't understand but accept because the person teaching them seems to get it and they seem smart enough. I could never understand why any doubts that I had about any beliefs had to be hidden from everybody for fear of being turfed out.
I've since been dismayed by what I've learned about changing teachings on blood, and chronology, among other things, and I'm disgusted by their coverup of child abuse cases. I also always hated disfellowshipping, and now that it's happened to me, I know why.
