It seems to me that because we came out of one religious group that didn't tolerate anything, that some now feel that we have to tolerate everything----even another religion that breeds terrorists.

That is an interesting point. But I don't personally feel compelled to tolerate everything. But I also think hatred of muslims/islaam won't help either. And I do strongly feel that 95 of muslims here do not support this terrible action which evidently killed muslims too. It was an indiscriminate attack. It was murder. I don't object to Catholics because someone raised Catholic becomes a serial killer. Surely some of our most notorious killers had a religious background - Bundy? Gacy? Rillington place killer?

I just had another thought - and that is that society breeds killers too, but can't object to all of society in a blanket way...

I agree with you Mary two hundred percent !!!

I too am sick to death of all this political correctness that is literally killing us! I am ready to vomit on the floor if I hear one more well-meaning trite statement. (Of course terrorists are using our political correctness to carry out their evil deeds).

While I realize that not all muslims are bad or subversive, I cannot help but feel that some are guilty by association or tacit approval.

I am sorry to say that they are not a welcome sight to me.

Hey Crumpet, you're absolutely correct, but the difference is: the NT does not advocate murdering non-believers, even though "christian" religions did this very thing. Jesus said we should love our enemies, not blow them to Kingdom come (no pun intended) .

Did Bundy or Gacy or Charles Manson kill because of their religious beliefs? Not to my knowledge----they were just evil people. The scary thing about Islam is that their 'holy writings' do advocate murdering non-believers as demonstrated by the quotes from the Qu'ran----this is where they get their justification for it. And here we sit worrying about their "Rights" while they're sitting there plotting the next attack!

Gee, what other religious group do we know that's such a "lovely, welcoming bunch" to a newcomer, and who hides the truth of their religion? Hmmmmm........................

There are indeed very agressive passages in the Koran and I am surprised that those who read it failed to notice them. Nothing like the sheepish attitude advocated by the gospels.

More like the hard-core line of the Old Testament

I did read the koran, and first of all it is really boring. There is so little story telling, all the time allah is great and bla bla bla, and if you do not do what he says he will bla bla bla.
And yes there are very hard texts in them. Hard for women, hard for non believers, jews, christians etc.

But just as those hard quotes from the OT, most moslims don't take them to seriously.

    However some do.

Guy at work, looking at the headlines the other day about the explosions in London, said out loud: "I suppose we'll just have to kill them all."

There were several of us within earshot. No one said anything in response.

I'm hoping the feeling isn't universal.

On another note, I'd like to tell what happened in a small Texas town a couple days after 9/11. I believe the men were Pakistans (or some dark skin). They had bought a convenience/beer store that had been owned by the same American family for 15 years. The 2 men were standing behind the counter and were heard to say that "the American's got what they deserved!". Of course, that's the wrong thing to say in front of good ole' redneck guys. They ended up getting the shit beat out of them. When the cops got there and found out what had been said- he told the owner "you got what you deserved!" After that no one would go in there. There were more than several "drive-byes". It didn't take to long for them to leave the area!!

It looks like I missed a lot while I was away! I hate pc too - I think it is divisive than unifying.

Strange, I was thinking that myself too when I wrote it!

Mary, I checked the quotes from the Qur'an. This is what I see:

Surah 9.29 - It does read as you quoted, but I suspect that there is a historical context to the whole surah, which looks like a code of conduct and instructions on how to deal with opposition etc.

On the I.S. course I took, we were told that Jizyah is like income tax, paid by non muslims instead of zakat which muslims have to pay (both these taxes go to provide help for the needy and keep the state running). It is a smaller amount than zakat. Its also seen as 'protection money' (not meaning that in its bad sense) as non muslims aren't permitted to join the army.

Surah 9.30 - My translation begs to differ slightly, it says 'may Allah's curse be on them' - not as extreme as 'destroy'

Surah 8.12 The whole verse reads: Remember thy Lord inspired the angels (with the message): I am with you: give firmness to the Believers: I wil instil terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers: smite ye above their necks and smite all their fingertips off them.'

So this appears to be instructions given to the angels rather than to Muhammad and his army. Surah 8.13 continues: 'This is because they contended against Allah and His Messenger' - The angels can only carry out the punishment against people who have actively opposed Muhammad. The whole surah is entitled 'The spoils of war' Again, it had a historical context. Also, to support this, I learnt that Muslims are forbidden to dismember bodies - friend or foe.

Re the 'divine' commandment to persecute Jews and Christians and your examples:

Surah 8.39 - Is in a section dealing with defeated enemies (who have actively opposed). So I suppose this verse was about how to deal with 'terrorists' who insist on not living in peace after the war has ended!!

Surah 9.5 - Refers in my translation to the Pagans, not Christians and Jews.

Surah 9.29 - See previous comments!

Surah 47.4 - 'Therefore, when ye meet the Unbelievers (in fight) , smite at their necks; at length, when ye have thoroughly subdued them, bind a bond firmly (on them): thereafter (is the time for) either generosity or ransom: until the war lays down its burdens'

This appears to be battle code rather than general instructions.

On the I.S. course, we were taught that there were clear definitions of groups in Islam - Believers(Muslims), People of the Book (Jews, Christians), and Unbelievers (Pagans and Hypocrites ie backsliders from Islam). If this is so, then those references need to be taken into account also.

All this said, I wish the extremists would read it in proper context too - so goes the saying:

A text taken out of context is the pretext for a proof text.

Here's a nicer verse to finish with!

Surah 60.7,8 reads 'It may be that Allah will grant love (and friendship) between you and those whom ye (now) hold as enemies....Allah forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) Faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for Allah loveth those who are just.'

Phew - I must learn to type faster!

tijkmo (no, this is not for tij, I'm just quoting him)

the irony just knocks me out Here are a bunch of folks on the 'net arguing about whether muslims are all evil and should be wiped from the face of the earth,,,,

and I saw the man who spearheads this 'war on terror islam', GWB

walking in his garden, holding hands with the MUSLIM Saudi prince on TV about 3 weeks ago, because they have been such good friends since they were in university, and they were getting together to talk over the situation ....

    like I said, tijkmo

    'nuff said!

    peace out
