Yeah, I wonder if China is really willing to be blown back to the Stone Age just so they can grab a small island.

- The USSR threatened to nuke us if we did not let them setup their nuclear missiles in Cuba. ; That didn't fly. ; We stared them down at the blockade until they turned tail and went home.
- Iraq tried a land grab in Kuwait... ; we kicked his ass back to Baghdad.
Before you start singing the Star Spangled Banner have you actually spoken to the average mainland Chinese about Taiwan and its future? You will find that they are incredibly, almost religiously nationalistic about its return. It is not a small Island to them, it is a matter of large national pride.

They're probably still using Chairman Mao's nuclear strategy when China didn't have nuclear weapons: let them nuke China, and then attack.
Yes, the Chinese have prepared for nuclear war for the past three decades and have enormous, fully equipped cities beneath the earth to house citizens of their larger cities in the event of a nuclear holocaust. The loss if its citizens is not viewed so much a tragedy as a practical need during war. The Chinese are pragmatic thinkers and patient planners, whose policies are always looking a hundred years ahead and are not based in the short term as most Western policies are.
Though their sense of social community is more fragile than it used to be, it has not been watered down where it counts, in the dogma of its politics.
