8 "Therefore bear fruits in keeping with repentance, and ( L ) do not begin to say to yourselves, ' ( M ) We have Abraham for our father,' for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham.
9 "Indeed the axe is already laid at the root of the trees; so ( N ) every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire."
... 14 Some soldiers were questioning him, saying, "And what about us, what shall we do?" And he said to them, "Do not take money from anyone by force, or accuse anyone falsely, and be content with your wages."
Think of a couple of scenarios. What if instead of John the Baptist in the 1st century this was a GB member at the last DC, being asked by a soldier in the crowd just back from Iraq what he should do to repent and "bear fruit" to please God. Would the GB member, by any stretch of the imagination, tell him what John told the Roman soldiers? OK, Even if the GB member was having a "senior moment" and did mutter something along these lines, would it be quoted in the next issue of the Watchtower magazine? Without qualification?
Another scenario. What if instead of soldiers they were prostitutes? And John replies something like: "Be honest with your clients and be happy with whatever your pimp pays you." Would that one have made it to the scriptures?
