My stepdad did remodeling, electrician, and janitorial work. He was also a MS. He was always helping a couple elderly brothers with anything at home. He helped a single sister that had a baby. He even helped this guy's son he did some electrician work for. He burned up his motor and was going to get in alot of trouble. They always volunteered me for babysitting-free of course. And of course we always went to quick builds and when they build the St loius convention center. He did work for others in the congregation and rarely got paid.

After I became a nurse I started doing alot of volunteer work in the community. Alot with Red Cross on their diaster team and with a womens hotline and battered shelter. I've cut back for now--till I get my license back.

I remember one middle aged sister who would make a handmade quilt for evey baby born in the congo. She did this for over 20 years.

I don't quilt, but I used to crochet. I made baby afghans or layettes (sweater with matching booties, mittens, and hat) for every baby, JWs and their regular studies. I did enjoy doing this and I hope that every JW having a new baby at my last KH, will think of this at every shower they give, LOL!

It stinks that now I am only remembered as be "that APOSSSSSTATE" (hissing noise) and not the nice person who did the nice things.

My Dad had a part time auto repair out of our house, and the dubs were the only ones who didn't pay their bills and expected a STEEP discount.

  • I quit!
    I quit!

I was in construction in my early years as a dub so I wound up working on K Halls now and then. I remember a friend of mine and me having to redo a lot of things the vounteers who had no experience in contruction messed up. I really didn't feel used because I like the work and the people I worked with. Much better than spending Saturday morning knocking on doors. I remember one time fixing a brother's mother's roof. I did about $500. worth of work and was bought a breakfast at IHOP as payment. I didn't mind because I knew she couldn't afford to hire someone to do it. In it area I was from it was stress that a jdub should pay another jbub fair market value for services rendered and I think most of them seemed to abide by that rule. If you did something cheap it was usually because you wanted to not because someone was trying to screw you.

Like Richie I helped quite a few people move and when I moved there was no shortage of volunteers. I felt kind of bad about my last move as witness. I had quite a few young brothers help me move and shortly there after quit the dubs. I kind of felt like I used them even though at the time I didn't know I was leaving. Probably the only guilt I felt over leaving.

I gave of my time, finances, car, food, you name it all the time & way too much. But at the time it was out of love for my brothers.. I honestly didn't mind doing it. Now I realise that them people just grab and run.
