I agree that we are going through some growing pains related to the information age. It is painful to have one's belief system overturned, so when new evidence comes forward, invariably there will be groups of people who band together and declare that they will never change.

Generally speaking, I believe that most humans will tend to choose the reasonable explanation, even when under mild pressure to conform to the traditional view. That is, I believe that our desire to be reasonable is slightly stronger than our desire to uphold the status quo. What this means is that, over the long term, the reasonable explanations will tend to gain wide approval. Eventually, when the reasonable explanations are also the traditional views, reason will have triumphed for good.

    This is an interesting question.

First let me say what I think aboutthe JW's in 50 years as they obviously will never accept evolution and other scientific evidence. There numbers will decrease but they wil still be there. In certain countries they will still have a lot of followers but in europe, america etc, there will be few of them.
Once people have made up their minds it is very hard to change. Only few can, most ignore all facts (for example the overwhelming evidence that there has never been a global flood). But to try to get new converts, will be hell, including children of jw's.

I think the muslim religion is now where the christian religion was one hunderd years ago. Things will open up there too, however slow it may go. It will depend very much on the politics too. Countries like Turkey will view islam a lot different then Iran or Saudi in 50 years. (unless political changes happen)

The christian religion will become more and more a lifestyle and will grow towards humanism. It will be more like the way boeddism, in the way that it discribes how to live but does not describe any explanation about origin or destination.

Well that is just my opinion.

BIG PICTURE I think that the human race is currently the equivalent of a young child finding it way in the world, and slowly working out that our invisible friends arent actually real. We're also currently learning that biting our siblings doesnt actually achieve anything and that pissing on the carpet and eating all our lollies in one big gorging session isnt that clever.

    - well said. and welcome to the board Dazz_C

Well put, Seattle Nice Guy (you really are nice ), this makes a lot of sense.

And as far as the argument about shaking up the parts of a 747 and never coming out with a whole airlplane, well, in millions of years time who knows? Just because something can't be explained doesn't make it automatically false. A bumblebee can't fly, on paper, but those suckers will fly over and give you a good sting if you aren't careful! Put that in the bag and shake it...

I'm somewhat skeptical of JW's not beleiving that the earth is 6000 years old. However, many of the kids never really talk about it but somewhat accept it. When shown dates of civilizations living prosperously and great in numbers not even close to where Adam and Eve were created close to the time that the earth was supposedly created, they somewhat accept it but never give a second thought to it. I think this will be the attitude of the general "hip" JW's in the future but I doubt the GB will change their mind on it, even if the babies now are the future GB members. It's a mindset no?
