Why don't they have a Welcomer giving out Bibles and songbooks to use at the meetings like they do in the churches?

    17. Other (please detail)

Actually, they do hand out WTs at the WT study if some thinking JW brings in the old ones from home rather than have them pile up in the closet. I have seen them take out Bibles from lost and found and given them to visiting people without them. To be totally honest, very few non-JWs come to the meetings any more because fewer and fewer bible studies are conducted to that point. I haven't seen any non-JWs every just wander in. Is money a direct issue any more since no one pays directly for the publications any more.

The churches I have been to have Bibles and songbooks in the shelf in front of each pew and you leave them there when you go home.

    Hi,

I've been to churches that do not hand out Bibles. I've also been to those that do.

As for the JWs I suppose their tradition is not to hand them out. Most JWs come with their own and most people who visit do so after being invited by a JW who supplies them with what they need.

So happy to be here, by the way.

We don't use the Bible at the WatchTower Study... where you been lately? Are you sure you are a Witness? We haven't needed the Bible for years cuz we are fed through the pages of the BotchTower by the FDS.

You don't need a songbook either. Just act like you're singing "We're Joe Hoba's Witnesses, ours is the true God of prophecy".

I thought JW's are supposed to consider themselves as Ministers of Jehovah. They supposedly replace all the clergy of wicked old Christendom, and, of course, JW's are not a paid ministry.

Now, I am thinking that Ministers are supposed to have their own study tools such as their NWT of the Bible, and the Watchtower magazine (and even their own song book- since they are expected to supply everything else). Just like the Ministers of other churches, who have their own bibles and study aids. These are not usually provided by the church as an organization (except they almost always supply the hymnbooks, which are part of the church budget.

Thinking about it, I note that most kingdom halls do not come with pews, with built-in shelving at the back of the pews to house books and publications. That, in itself, probably makes things a bit awkward or impractical. I think these Ministers of Jehovah are supposed to be on the alert for new visitors, and then "befriend" them at the meeting, and even share their bible or magazine with them during the course of the meeting.

I hardly think some back issue of the Watchtower would be very useful in a meeting discussing the contents of the latest issue. But usually some brother or sister sitting with or near this visitor at least has a spare copy/issue in their briefcase or purse, and are willing to let the visitor use it. I saw that happen many times when I used to attend. Also, if a stranger came to a meeting with nothing in hand, I would see a husband and wife, who each had a songbook, give up one to the visitor, and then the husband and wife would share the other one together. After the meeting they would go up to the stranger and try to engage him/her in a conversation, and maybe that could lead to a bible study or whatever. Now this was back in the early 1960's, and I know it's gotten a lot weirder out there, so maybe they are not as friendly as they once were. I don't know.

When you compare the JW environment to that of most Protestant Churches, I would say that a lot of the Protestant Ministers have a real challenge getting people to attend church. And so they try to make things as easy as possible for attendees, by providing them with hymn books and even Bibles, plus "program sheets with announcements" at the door. Remember, all these people who come to these churches pretty well always give cash donations in the collection plate that gets passed around. That is quite different than the situation with JW's and KH meetings.

    17. They might inadvertently speak to 'apostates'!

I can verify what damselfly and RodP said. Whenever I've visited the local KH, the people I sat with always shared their songbook with me, which I find quite nice. I always sit with the Witnesses who visit me to drop in WT and Awake though so I'm not sure what would happen if I went and sat next to someone who didn't know me - I think maybe the same, as most of the other folk did say 'hello' to me and ask about me - more friendly than some 'mainstream' churches.

The only people who don't appear that friendly are the 'sidespeople' (still dunno what you call them!) who look more threatening than nightclub bouncers!

Katiekitten hit the nail on the head. It's up to a publisher to teach/direct the newcomer to the literature counter. If it's a wander in type person who obviously isn't sitting with a dub who invited them, then the custom is.....any observant publisher ...man or woman, can supply this person with needed a songbook or bible.

Many will share their songbook with a new one if they are standing there with no songbook, or will share scriptures with them if they have no bible. If it's a new girl with real big bosoms and a cute fanny, a brother will share his personal stuff. If it's a scraggly guy with a beard and smells like a yardsale, then the brother will give the guy his wifes books to the guy and share his own stuff with his wife.

They don't have enough "new people" to justify it. Every meeting has the same-ol faces every time.

    17. Some attending apostate might deface the bible or songbook for others to see and be stricken.

But I agree with the accessment that there are not enough new people attending to even bother.

GRRRRR! My reform was going pretty well, but now that dang silly tune is stuck in my head. Oh the trauma! Time for my anti-jw medication

Seriously though, we loved to give newcomers a bible, songbook and a mag on Sunday. Easy placements. We (guys at the lit counter)viewed the books/mags as free to all, and so what it cost the Society was of no thought to us at all. But getting to count 3 or 6 or maybe even 9 placements was like winning the jw lotto.

There are not many unknown visitors,

and I would think that they would not do something like it, because while sharing a bible with the person next to him/her he already starts to get his bible study.
as sooma s you enter the KH, they don;t want to let you be just a unknown listener
