WT web site now says to get professional help for psychological trauma/rape
That's big of them. Are they trying to say that they're not qualified to empathise with / counsel an individual who has experienced a traumatic event? I am gobsmacked.
This topic is funny to me because I once saw an elder who was a psychiatrist, professionally. I forgot his name, but he practiced somewhere in the San Diego area. My mom made me go see him after something had happened. She must have figured that I would get a double whammy seeing that he was both a doctor and an elder. I remember sitting there with him prying me for information but I was pretty tight lipped during the entire visit. If I recall correctly, it bothered me that he was a witness. My folks were the typical JW's that looked upon this line of medical treatment as being of the debil. But it was A-OK to go see one of these doctors because he was a JW. That made it all better.
Jourles, I think it was good that you didn't say too much. The whole idea of confiding in this elder/psychiatrist guy gives me the willies. I wonder if he would have kept anything disfellowship-worthy that he heard in his professional capacity confidential...so much potential for abuse there.
Elder = someone not to trust. Confidentiality with the elders is a joke. They are the biggest gossips!!!
I didn't realize they had come out and said this before. In 2001 I was in my "pretend like the jw thing didn't happen" phase, so I didn't have any idea what they were saying. The last thing I knew on that topic would have been in 2000 when I treated a jw sex abuse victim whose perp was her elder-dad, and he wasn't the least bit accepting of her seeking therapy. I guess JWs don't care about conflicts of interest either.
An elder who is a psychiatrist....that's a laugh. The two roles seem mutually exclusive. I imagine he had to be a good elder/bad MD or a bad elder/good MD.
Awaky, gobsmacked....I learn so many funny words on the internet. :)
Considering that the WTS has put in writing that JW healthcare professionals or even the receptionist at the clinic who finds out that a JW has while a JW had an abortion or a transfusion is required to report it to the elders to be handled judicially. I wish I could find my post some months back where a JW lost her job, sued, and lost again in court for breaking confidentiality.
