I vote for genuine, hanging off Blondie's perceptive shirttails. Blondie says the proof is in what happens next, and I agree. Can the JW's deliver on their promise?
OK, let's take up defd's challenge. What would we have done differently?
First of all, I wouldn't be going door to door looking for receptive strangers, so this person would most likely be my literal neighbour. I would have some qestions of my own.
- What precipitated her anger towards God?
- Has she experienced a recent trauma?
- Does she have family and friends she can talk to about it?
- What would it take for her hope to begin to be restored?
- What is her biggest need at the moment?
For needs bigger than any person can handle, I'd offer to pray about it. No instant-pudding answers from me. Are there little examples of love and care that are within my power to do? For instance, this week my granddaughter and I baked some rhubarb crumble (the neighbour had been pining away for her grandmother's recipe), painted a card and an envelope, and delivered it next door. My neighbour laughed, "You evil person you!" and gratefully accepted the gift (she really did call me evil). That night she delivered a pot of chili at our door.
Did we cure world hunger? No.
Did we add, incrementally, joy to our bit of world? I hope so.
