probably not a Pet let out...your in Surrey, hmm i think Red Kites are down that way these days or more than likely a Buzzard. But yeah like you say, nature red in tooth and claw.....
Fleman - it was not a red kite - I wish - this was a sparrowhawk or harrier, but didnt see it for long enough to determine.
Hisbis - why use the "resplendent" word - is that not belonging to some oher annoying person who ocassionally makes valuable comments? I can't say names cos I'm too inebriated to recall but I'm guessing my friendly moneky KLS or other can assist in identification on this point.
(I believe grinojj)
Crumpet, why do you say I am annoying?????? Are you misjudging me? I am like a marabou, misjudged!!!!!!!!
I am also resplendent!!!!!!
How fortunate I am!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do not misjudge the marabou!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Crumpet,
Two summers ago, I watched a huge owl after the young of a parliament of crows. I sat in the field at the edge of the wood for 45 minutes and watched, while the owl swooped at the nest repeatedly. The crows (guards, there were 7 or 8 of them) kept at the owl, dive-bombing it over and over again. Finally, the owl realized that in spite of its size and power, the mission was futile, gave up, and flew off to look for other prey.
What you saw was just the circle of life in action.
