... or does it seem like our government is responding with the speed of a snale to the Katrina issue. I am watching news program after news program with people in the field saying, "there is no one here!" Where the hell is everything, VACATION? What is up, is the plan to thin the population or something? Seems like it. Anyone else noticing this?

They did not prepare for every eventuality. They did not want to disrupt the tourists and they put too much faith in the sturdiness of the sea walls and levees despite reports from the engineers that more needed to be done and federal funds were cut several times for this improvement.

Also, the decision to evacuate comes from the local level and moves up the line and this mayor did not feel it was necessary to make evacuation mandatory. Many of the people who stayed did not have the means to leave on their own, no transportation and no place to evacuate to. Many were older people and people who figured if the government did not think it was too serious, they could stay in their homes.

Martial law has to be declared in order to force evacuation and most people with that decision making power don't want to rock the political boat.

Thus the means to deal with this type of disaster were not already in place.

Yeah just watched the evening news on ABC and yeah a snail's pace is an apt description

And I just hate the smug look Bush has on his face when he says that help is coming and people just have to be patience all the while people are dying on the streets of New Orleans

I like the question one woman asked on Larry King last night....New Orleans has been below sea level since the day it was built...why now are they trying to work out a plan to patch the earthen seawalls....haven't they worried about them falling apart before this, don't they have any plans in place? Duh, that's our government for you. My questions is...why didn't they bus people out of the city BEFORE the hurricane hit and why didn't the managers of Walmart take all the guns and ammunition with them when they locked up the store and left town....rather than leave it for people to steal and shoot each other with? And why weren't emergancy supplies put in place and available at the stadium if that was the only shelter the city was going to open? Seems to me that the politicians in the City of New Orleans did not take care of their citizens very well and it seems to me that a lot of those citizens don't feel any responsibilty for taking care of themselves but expect someone to step in and take care of them. They also seem to feel that that plasma TV is a necessity right now and that "if I don't get my way I'll just shoot something". FEMA and the Red Cross always take a few days to get situated and unfortunately they have three states to cover and major problems getting in to the areas. My best friend and partner of 12 years, has a lot of family in Mississippi and we've not been able to contact any of them...he's a retired Marine and has told me step by step exactly which ships will be sent and when they would arrive and so far he's not been wrong.

How long would it take you to deploy thousands of troops, ships, helicopters, and first responder personnel ?

They replied pretty damned quickly for the tsunami. This is our country, and our people. What is taking so long???? I absolutely agree.

I am pretty glued to the TV, and just get more and more frustrated.

Bill O'Reilly asked about what if it had been a terrorist attack, and how long it would take to get a response if that had happened. Would it be 4 days then? I thought that was a good point.

On O'Reilly a guy on the phone who was in New Orleans summed it up great, when he said "If there was a multi-terror attack like 911 in this nation, we would be screwed!" He was in downtown New Orleans and from what he described, it was third world nation behavior and people were killing and being killed. It will get worse!

The whole thing is just to sad at times. My heart just aches for them.

What I want to know is - What human being[s] decided it was a good idea to build a major city behind levies, below sea level, in an area that is ofteh hit by tropical storms and hurricanes? Was the man a complete imbicil that made the decision to do that? Of course he is long dead by now - but he should have been hung for such a stupid idea!

    I thought the same thing.

You mean to tell me the greatest nation with equallygreat, ready to act military.........can not control a bunch of thugs down in New Orleans??

They should have already went down there , and gained control over this situation.

Help can not be given to the ones who need it, the law abiders, the sick, the children, the elderly, because the thugs want to shoot.

So they can't do anything, they dont want to get shot I understand that........why thou so long in getting SWAT military police ....should have been activated much, much sooner.
