You mean to tell me the greatest nation with equallygreat, ready to act military.........can not control a bunch of thugs down in New Orleans??

They should have already went down there , and gained control over this situation.

Remember when we heard the first reports of looting? There was a debate on this board on how to treat looters. Should they be shot? Should they be left to loot since it was about survival?

Well, I think we have our answer now. If the looters had been dealt with as soon as it started, the authorities could have kept better control on the situation. But since we felt compassion for the victims we were willing to suspend the laws and morals that we normally live by so that maybe people could survive until real help could come.

While we excused people stealing water and food, criminals and thugs took advantage of the situation and started chaos and anarchy with their new found freedom to steal, plunder, loot, rape and kill. That's why laws apply to all people. You can't excuse one guy for stealing but punish another one for it, just because the item stolen is different. Looting is looting, stealing is stealing. Because of allowing some looting, the situation detioriated(sp) into what it is now.

I was one that said looting for food was okay but looting jewelry and TVs was wrong. I now revise my opinion on that. If all looting had been treated equally, this situation could have been stablized much sooner.

The US is a nation of mollycoddlers. We treat bad situations with kid gloves. And now we see that sometimes you have to take a firm stand and use force to control a situation.

It IS time for the military to move in and take control. Take out the looters...and I mean shoot to kill. For every relief/rescue helicopter that goes in, send in two Blackhawks armed to the teeth. If anyone takes a shot or throws a rock or proceeds to stampede the resuce copter, open fire. If warning shots don't keep them back, then take out the front line. You'll restore some kind of order damn quick. Now, it's about the greater good. To save as many as possible that are still stranded and hiding from the crime and violence you have to go in strong, use force, send a message and do the job.

We are going to learn alot here. This misery and mismanaged situation will be studied for long after this day. This country is new to defending itself on its own shores. As Americans we have not had much practice in banding together as a people to stay alive. 911 and now this. What is next? I hope my conduct when my local disaster hits will be something I can look back on and be proud of. Preparation is the key, both physically and emotionally. A soldier's attitude of courage and bravery are required. I am so impressed by the willingness of so many to enroll in the Red Cross' relief program. Hundreds are signing up for 2 day courses to go to N.O. and offer their help in any way they can. I hope they all bring some water and formula for the babies and children. That breaks my heart most of all, seeing parents and grandparents holding limp dehydrating children.

Now I am hearing authorities blaming the governor of Louisiana for not letting the government know what they needed soon enough.

Brother, they just can't accept the fact that they really screwed up this time. Hospital ships should have been en route on Saturday or Sunday. They send them YESTERDAY and they will be ther by the 8th. Should be plenty of dead to deal with by then.

Like the governer needed to report how much damage there was, doesn't anyone in Washington have CNN or FOXNEWS? I could tell without the governor calling for help, that these people needed help. Although, after seeing how the people have acted in New Orleans with lotting, murder, etc. perhaps it was time for that city to die.
