Celine Dion, on the devastation

She was a guest by remote from Las Vegas, on Larry King last night. She was so emotional, and crying that she could hardly speak. But, she said some powerful things. She and her husband donated $1 million, but she was downplaying that.

I searched the online transcripts of the show and found this part that made me break down. (remember English is not her first language)

Yes, we gave $1 million but what we expect, what I want to look like the rest of the world, I open the television there's people still there waiting to be rescued and for me it's not acceptable. I know there's reasons for it. I'm sorry to say I'm being rude but I don't want to hear those reasons.

You know, some people are stealing and they're making a big deal out of it. Oh, they're stealing 20 pair of jeans or they're stealing television sets. Who cares? They're not going to go too far with it. Maybe those people are so poor, some of the people who do that they're so poor they've never touched anything in their lives. Let them touch those things for once.

The main thing right now it's not the people who are stealing. It's the people who are left there and they're watching helicopters flying over their heads and they're praying. How come it's so easy to send planes in another country to kill everyone in a second, to destroy lives?
We need to serve our country and for me to serve our country is to be there right now to rescue the rest of the people. We need the cash. We need the blood. We need the support. Right now we need the prayers.

You know when I was hearing a couple of days ago that these things are not reachable it's too full of water, maybe I'm too much like my -- I'm not thinking with my head. I'm talking with my heart. Nobody can open any roofs? The helicopters flying in take two people at a time, take a kayak. Go into those walls.
There's kids being raped at night. They hear gunshots, big guns, what's that? Those people are praying. They're walking. They're like this, hello, do you see us? We're still alive but we're dying. It's terrible.

Then Larry asked her to sing a song. She was able to compose herself and sang "The Prayer" without any accompaniment. Wow, what a voice, and with all that emotion, I was crying again.

I didn't watch that segment of Larry King last night, I was pretty much glued to FOX news. I DO know that Celine Dionne is a very warm and what seems to be a sincere person. I've watched her on numerous shows on TV and she always exhibits this in her interviews and appearances.

I have loved her voice since the first time I heard her on the radio one day in the car, and have followed her career wherever possible. She came frm a very very impoverished background in rural Canada, and has many siblings. They never had very much in their lives, so I can understand her statements and why she made them!

She also downplays her (now) wealth and has appeared to me to be a very humble , generous and appreciative lady.

    Thanks for your post!

    hugs,

    Annie

Mr. King had the right idea: "Shut up, Celine, and sing."

I wonder how Celine will feel when she finds out that they are stealing her CDs and burning them to stay warm?

I'm going to go down to Tower Records right now and steal some Celine Dion CDs - I'll keep a "perpetual flame" of burning stolen Celine Dion CDs going to remind me of the suffering in New Orleans.

    That should help.

Oh, and I'll hum showtunes too. I'm a very spiritual guy, you know.

She sounds nice and obviously moved because she's acting!

Remember her wedding - big Roman Catholic affair. Do you think her priest taught her the ethics of urban survival - that theft is OK if you are sufficiently inconvenienced?

Maybe rape is OK too, under such desperate circumstances. After all, da gansta's gotta get some somethin', y'all.

ANYONE who condones criminal behavior on the part of one person against their neighbor has no right to complain when they are the victims of criminal behavior.

    word up, y'all.

Celine Dion has always impressed me as a genuinely kind and loving person... Doesn't surprise me that she has donated $1 million, or that she's downplaying it.

I hope her money, and the money of everyone else who has donated, is put to good use to help those in need.

I think that Celine's response to the looting of material goods (not guns, rape etc) comes from the experience of having been poor and mix that in with a compassionate, common sense person and you have transcript. I happen to agree with her...the looting of electronics and 'stuff' that is of no real value in this situation is of little consequence and can be dealt with later...help for all of those people get out and then deal with all the other issues. If the Guard had of been sent the first or second night you wouldn't have had all the looting and there would have been some control even if there were still people waiting for food and water..it didn't happen so if I have to make a choice between getting upset over a guy/gal stealing a plasma TV or someone dying from lack of water/food and shelter - I'm not going to like what the thief is doing but my first concern is going to be saving the life.

Given the same circumstances I'm sure many of us would do what we had to in order to survive and if that meant taking food and water, a blanket or some shoes from a store then we'd do it. I guess in the long run if we felt so righteous that stealing for survival was something we just couldn't bring ourselves to do and we died for that belief, then too we shouldn't be judged for what other peoplemight see as stupidity.

I'm just glad that finally help is there....I imagine some heads will roll when it's all over.
