Given the same circumstances I'm sure many of us would do what we had to in order to survive and if that meant taking food and water, a blanket or some shoes from a store then we'd do it. I guess in the long run if we felt so righteous that stealing for survival was something we just couldn't bring ourselves to do and we died for that belief, then too we shouldn't be judged for what other peoplemight see as stupidity.

I wouldn't call that looting or stealing. I'd call it survival. Yesterday the news showed a man who had filled a shopping cart full of baby supplies from stores. He took all he could to the N.O. convention center to hand out. I say God bless him!

Stealing plasma T.V.'s is one thing, trying to find the necessities of life in a crisis situation is survival.

I happen to call it survival too but there are a heck of a lot of people spouting off on the radio talks shows and elsewhere who feel obliged to condemn anyone for 'removing' unpaid for items from stores - they insist that this is looting and stealing and not a matter of survival. I've seen the people leaving with a mountain of clothing under their arm from the stores - I could care less because how do any of us know that they aren't trying to get clothing to put on the backs of not only themselves but their kids, parents, siblings, neighbours.

..............................as if those stores aren't insured...............their stock, the food especially, would have been a total loss unless someone came in and ate it.

I have no problem with that kind of "looting" if you want to call it that. The first day, the police didn't stop them, and were in the stores maintaining order. I saw a woman leaving a Wal Mart with two huge bags of Huggies, and several smaller ones in her arms. I said "good for her", very practical.

I also thought the mayor of New Orleans was on target. It wasn't just what he had to say but the way it was spoken. I applaud him for telling it like it was in his moments of frustration - blunt but honest.

I saw that interview. Celine seems to present genuine concern and motives. She is not an actress nor do I know of any past dishonesty or reason to doubt her, so I'm taking her at face value.

Celine has some....unusual....facial expressions sometimes. Perhaps that is what's making her appear disingenuous.

If her words move even one person to help, then it doesn't matter if she's acting or sincere. And it was kind of her to refer to "our country" when she is Canadian and could have pointed fingers at America's failings -- what she said was unifying, not accusatory.

Nathan, but what's criminal behaviour in these circumstances?`I'm hoping you're referring to those with guns, shooting at those offering to help. "Stealing" and "looting" become very flexible in these circumstances; we're talking of people at the edge; we may never know how much of the "looting" was done in desperation, or, the possibility of barter at the back of the minds of the takers; is it wrong to take food and clothing that would otherwise become ruined in the circumstances we've had in New Orleans? Next time the government prepares for disasters, they should also run scenarios with the decline of morality in extenuatingly desperate circumstances, it's human nature. People stealing cars so they can get out, people stealing food and water to feed themselves and their neighbours, would we all wrap them in that blanket of criminality?

    But I digress.

Celine 's probably not acting; her inarticulateness alone is perhaps a clear sign of someone speaking from the heart. And she's put her money where her voice is. She's a singer and 's got a voice to speak for the downtrodden too. Great heart; she's shown it; great show, evn, if that's what it is.
