I actually used to wonder about this while I was still in. But I figured the gov bod would never ask us to do that, drink almond flavored kool-aid. But, if all of us were bleeding to death, in unison, they'd expect us to refuse blood. Same difference.
My brother and I (also out) have had this discussion. We both believe most of the R&F would drink.
Sherry
Kool'aid is being offered in a sense. Drink this delicious potion of words at the proper time, it is the one and only way to disappointment an everlasting life on a paradise earth. Once you drink it, you life as you know it will change forever. Your wordly friends will no longer be your friends. You will become a meek lamb, following orders from the GB. You will come to hate the ones who don't want you to drink this Kool-aid. Never mind the fact that they love you. There is a conditional different kind of love now, the kind of love which will never end -unless you start thinking for yourself. You'll be as lonely happy as a mouse in a forgotten chunk of swiss cheese. Your spiritual hell paradise is approaching with the speed of Haley's comet. Do you feel it? Do you feel it?
I was never in to it that much and I doubt even 10% are now.
There might be a very few that would take the kool-aid. I don't think in this day and age that 6 million witnesses would even consider it.
I doubt they would ever do the cool-aid thing because the WTS needs a sales force to peddle their books door-to-door.
Individual JWs aren't called "publishers" for nothing.
JWs are no different than Amway, only they sell religion.
One thing to remember about Jim Jones and the kool-aid. First he had sifted out those that would not leave their family and go to Guyana. There were quite a few that had left before that too because of his activities. Then these people were in a undeveloped country, way out in the country side, far away from civilization, communication, transportation.
Unless the attendants were guarding the doors with Uzis, many JWs would head for theirs cars. I'm not saying some would not drink it, but I left the WTS not that long ago and there are many secret rebels or JWs that secretly pick and choose what they will "obey" from the WTS. It would take a "true believer" or people who are being held hostage in the KH with a gun to their head before most JWs I know would do this.
But given a sifting out period and a little physical coercion on some who stay...maybe.
BTW, Heaven's Gate had a sifting out period. The people who died were by no means the only members, but the only ones willing to take that final step. The same is with Koresh's group which still exists with members that left/separated themselves before that fateful day.
Blondie (no koolaid drinker even when I was going)
ok - slightly off-topic and confessing my ignorance here but since I see it mentioned so often - What's koolaid and do we have a UK equivalent? (not that I might want to try it or anything )
Kool-aid is a brand name for a powdered usually fruit-flavored drink that is combined with water, sugar, and powder packet. Jim Jones added cyanide added to it for an extra "zip."
