jstalin, I believe the old prophet acted out of self-defense. Those children were probably a teenage gang of hoods and they were going to kill the prophet. Dont feel sorry for them. In fact, it was the bear that killed them, not the prophet. If you are blaming the prophet for telling a bear to do that, then you are saying the prophet had the power of God to command the bear to do so. If God's power was there for the prophet then definitely the kids were put to death by God for disrespecting his servant and threatening his life.
Daystar, The Saul in the O.T is not the same as the Saul of the N.T.
Definitely King Saul was under evil influences -

2 Kings 2:23, 24
23 And he proceeded to go up from there to Beth´el. As he was going up on the way, there were small boys that came out from the city and began to jeer him and that kept saying to him: “Go up, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead!” 24 Finally he turned behind him and saw them and called down evil upon them in the name of Jehovah. Then two she-bears came out from the woods and went tearing to pieces forty-two children of their number.
It looks to me like Elisha was not just an innocent bystander - he called down evil on a bunch of small boys. All because he was overly sensitive about his receeding hairline.
So, the next time a kid calls me fat is it ok if I kick him in the stomach? After all, it's not like I'm killing him, right? I'm sure the judge will understand, especially if I recite this scripture to him.

My favourite verses at the moment:
Job 13:
15 Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him. Even so, I will defend my own ways before Him. 16 He also shall be my salvation, For a hypocrite could not come before Him.
Psalm 73:
25 Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You. 26 My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Honesty
18 For to those who are perishing the message of the cross is foolishness, but to us who are being saved it is God’s power.

NWT - Acts 15:7-11
7 Now when much disputing had taken place, Peter rose and said to them: “Men, brothers, YOU well know that from early days God made the choice among YOU that through my mouth people of the nations should hear the word of the good news and believe; 8 and God, who knows the heart, bore witness by giving them the holy spirit, just as he did to us also. 9 And he made no distinction at all between us and them, but purified their hearts by faith. 10 Now, therefore, why are YOU making a test of God by imposing upon the neck of the disciples a yoke that neither our forefathers nor we were capable of bearing? 11 On the contrary, we trust to get saved through the undeserved kindness of the Lord Jesus in the same way as those people also.”
Its a passage I like not just an isolated scripture. Why? Because it shows that God knows the hearts of people he will let ANYONE have the good news. That the law of God IS NOT burdensome and that we will be SAVED purely because of the undeserved kindness or GRACE of Jesus Christ and not by how many hours spent in witnessing or how many meetings attended.

Insomniac
I've always been partial to the entire Song of Solomon. Very nice use of euphemisms, all that stuff about the guy's loins being like a herd of strong bulls and whatnot...When I'm in the right mood, it's actually quite sexy. Although there is virtually no mention made of foreskins, that was a disappointing oversight, I thought.

"So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, who has saved us and called us to a holy life - not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel." - 2 Timothy1:8-10 (NIV)
