mine seems to fear death above all else.

Carla, that may be a very good sign that his mind is not convinced of his reward. Most cultists fear what the normal person calls life. Most cultists look forward to death as an escape from this life. You may have reason for hope, yet.

Kid-A --I was going to say "big or small" blue smurfs!

I still get a small wave of anxiety when the elders would ask to meet with me. It was usually my stepdad (a MS), that would have "that look", you know the one-- like he's constipated, that would tell me I had to meet with the elders.

Ms. Whip those are hilariously true and yours especially Lawrence. Its so funny to think of these things and how silly they are, even smurfs? C'mon the second they told us smurfs were demonized that should have been the end of this religion. Anyone seen "Waterboy" with Adam Sandler, his mother kept saying everything was "the devil"? Thats JWism at its best. Heres some more fears:

Having to go out in service with family that doesn't take a coffee break.

Having to go out in service with the special pioneer who takes a coffee break at Canadian Tire because they have free coffee. (Absolutely true story)

Someone noticing you just underlined anything in your watchtower so it looks like you actually studied it.

When you were being graded on "gestures" for your talk.

Hitting your finger with a hammer at a quick build and screaming FU*K in front of hundreds of brothers. (My friend did this one)

Becoming the next 40 year old virgin of the hall (he is in his fifties by now in my old hall)

Trying to watch a "R" rated movie without getting caught by someone

Someone finding out you have dreams of a university degree instead of being a janitor.

    Masterbation.

Perhaps the greatest fear of all is having to face the realization that all of the sacrifices made, the countless hours spent in service and in boring meetings, the loss of family, friends, and opportunities, HAS ALL BEEN FOR NOTHING!

joelbear hits the proverbial nail right on the head in identifying "social disapproval" as what JWs fear the most.

And no wonder - the WTS procedure makes this inevitable:

    - Nobody is supposed to have friends outside of the congregation.

    - So, cut someone off from the congregation (either formally or otherwise) and they are left with nowhere.

    Jack.

the unknown, which is what we are!!!

The fear of living without the blanket of guilt and shame that they have come to depend on!

I used to schedule my time to have the inevitable "Mark, can we have a chat in the bookroom after the meeting please" included in it!! Never scared me, i loved the fact that i pissed the old boys off! Thats THE one reason I despise authority without humility now! The only thing i ever feared was having to go on the ministry and see my school mates!
I had my own ways around that, seen as i knew where all my mates lived, and my dad was the Service Overseer for our group, I'd always hae a look on the Friday night in the study to see what ministry we were doing on Saturday morning, and then make up some excuse about getting my hours in with Brother so-and-so in an other territory, and of course i started the clock as soon as I left the house, and walk the long way, so at least an hour to get to their ministry, just in time for them to be clocking off!! Ah happy days!

Fear is built up in the minds of Jehovah’s Witnesses by warning them of the dangers of the “outside” world and the enemies that surround them. Fear of losing the approval of the other members is a key factor in pressuring the members to continue.

The members are indoctrinated to fear questioning the leaders or being made to leave the group as they are told they will have no future if they are outside the safety of the group.

There is no legitimate reason for leaving and those that do must be shunned. Without the protection of the group they could be exposed to possession by demons. Fear is a prominent factor in keeping members of cults in line.
