There is nothing biblically wrong with being fat or obese.
oh yes there is. at least in JW sense...
i asked that to an elder in the "cigarette" context. i asked, if smoking is wrong, because it's a health threat, being overweight is wrong too.
he said, true, but it's hard to draw the line.
like always, everything i asked the elders or everything i pointed out was "true, but"... you have no idea how many "true, but"s i got.
Ever wonder why...........

Don't they give smokers six months to quit and if they don't they df them? Why should it be different for overeaters? Give them six months to lose the weight and then off with their unspirtitual heads! There would probably be a large influx of people here on jwd.

Back in the pioneer days, I knew an auxiliary pioneer who was the poster boy for gluttony. I'll never forget going to get pizza with him and his family. He would order two large pies - one for him and one for his wife and kids. If we went to a buffet- he would eat heaping piles of food. The guy could really put it away. If that wasn't bad enough, he was also a trekkie. He is an elder now living on disability (that he richly does not deserve).

Interesting discussion. I remember observing the same phenomenon about the screaming fundamentalists with whom I was associated as a young child. I think Oral Roberts did have some kind of rule about obesity at his college.
However, those who say obesity is not necessarily indicative of gluttony are correct. There are degrees and levels of every problem. If I stagger down the street, am I an alcoholic?

And what defines gluttony? Gluttony would have to be extreme over eating. And then how do you know that someone who is binging isn't ill with bulimia?

hmm, it's an interesting topic because I'm the guy who lost 5 stone to become thin very easily and I often walk around feeling I have a license to call people fat (having once been fat myself). It also brings in race, being that being over weight is now the no. 1 killer in America but not in other countries. That would imply to me that lifestyle does have something to do with being over-weight more often than genetic reasons. Anyway... my body is a temple. (NOT)

Ballistic, there aren't any more fat people here than in England or Russia, etc. The hype is due to the giant and lucrative diet industry in the USA.

Hasn't this topic been discussed before?

FHN, I am have to disagree with you here, it is just commonly accepted that the more wealthy the country (including England) people just generally weigh more. I'm not talking about disorders here.
