JW's and Divorce

Wow, seems like lots of JW's are getting divorced these days. Since I left the JW's 51/2 years ago I know of at least 5 couples that attended the congregation that I went to, who are now divorced. Is this getting more common where you are? If so, why do you think divorce is increasing?

I don’t believe the WTS presently discourages divorce as strongly as they did years ago. When people divorce on grounds other than adultery the main emphasis now is on them not being free to marry another. Of course when a marriage to another does occur the discipline ranges from nothing (or a slap on the wrist) to being DF’d. I always have thought this to be a case of using two separate scales. Divorce in the USA is at about a 50% rate for first marriages and JW divorces are most likely at the national average.

Dimples...here in Mass. all 4 congregations in my area have their share of divorces (more than 2-3 per)...some have hooked up with others on the internet and split the area...others have quietly found another one to be with (often another elder, pioneer or MS), got "found out", got df'd or publicly reproved, received a "scriptural divorce" from the offended spouse and then remarried...JW's really have the divorce steps down pat...it's pretty rampant and I agree it's far more than even 7-10 years ago. People seem to be far more restless and bored. They need to generate some excitement in their lives irrespective of what they've "learned" (heard a million times) or how their actions may hurt another. Love, humility, trust, respect...forget it...these qualities are not even illusions for these ones...

Yet...the very ones who play the rules will ignore you a non - meeting attender in a NY minute...

the divorce rate is increasing because apostates such as the ones on this board are infiltrating the congregation and posing to be jehovah's witnesses just so they can give them a bad name. it is one of the many tools satan uses to slander jehovah and his lovely organization. amen

I beleive that Fairmind is right to say that the Org nowadays talks openly about "Non Scriptural divorce" as an option. The only drawback is that one is not free to court another, or to re marry.

Years back, such a thing was never done. it was clearly taught that Jesus gave only one acceptable ground to end a marriage and that "Jehovah hates a divorce" Mal 2.16.

I also think that a lessoning of the "urgency of the times" has a bearing on it. I married in 1974 and we really believed that the New World was due at anytime. Nobody wanted to jeopardise the hope . Anyway, in the New World we thought "everything will work out, so stick with it".. I guess the flock are a little more realistic these days and see the need to secure happiness now

When people get married only because they want to have sex without the guilt, they often realize too late that they share no common interests, goals and even family values.

New York bethel minute - talking from experience neither me nor my ex wife had any thoughts of apostatsy, but we still ended up divorcing.

Many of us were genuine in our marriages but we just made a hasty and uninformed choice.
