This is exactly why they have toned down the use of strong language in the publications. It's best to say something vague rather than to strongly prophesy and look like utter fools & idiots when what is foretold ultimately fails to happen

I've been stumbled.
by silent ini just realized that all these dates that the borg have said the end would come on or by and then it didn't happen, have stumbled me.
why such a fascination and trying to divine the answer from scripture when scripture plainly says only the father knows the day and the hour?
by their predictions, they actually sent many christians on the path of date-based worship insted of faith-based worship.. if they have stumbled me, then who is reponsible for that?.

the social structure in the congregation is more complex than the blueprints of a nuclear warhead, but just so that you "remember your place", see if you can find where your niche was/is:.
1. at the top of the social order of things within the congregation is of course, the presiding overseer and his family.

I was at 1, then 2. My dad was the ex-PO. He stepped down to make way for someone younger. It was a stressful job & he just couldn't handle it anymore

Walk in with your heads held high as a happy family. Make them envious of you & your family. Talk enthusiastically to those who talk to you, emphasizing how great life has been for you & your family. If anyone tries to ignore you for whatever reason, do not shy away but greet them anyway & make them feel uncomfortable In short, make them jealous. That is the best advice I can think of

I am confused on the JW's 1000 year reign doctrine. Please explain it to me.
by booker-t ini have always thanked randy/dogpatch for creating free-minds because i always felt i was the only one that felt that jw's were teaching some nonsense.
i admit i still think they got some of their teachings correct but one doctrine i think is full of bologne is the 1000 year reign doctrine.
if jesus came into power in 1914 and now it is 2014 does that mean jws believe it will only be a 900 year reign?

Talesin, wow... that was way before my time. During my time, the signs of the times in Matt 24 were constantly emphasized & there would be a period of "critical times hard to deal with" (2 Tim 3: 1), then somehow the nations would start to move toward a time of peace (1 Thess 5: 3), then the end would come. That's why I said metatron's example would only reinforce the idea that the end is at hand rather than the opposite as 1 Thess would be the JW answer to his example

Metatron, sorry to say that your line of reasoning does not apply. JW's love quoting the scripture in 1 Thessalonians 5: 3 -- "Whenever it is that they are saying, "Peace and security!" then sudden destruction is to be instantly upon them"
In short:
If there is no peace: "World conditions are getting from bad to worse! The end is near!!!"
If there is peace: "1 Thessalonians 5: 3 is being fulfilled. The end is near!!!"
Either way, they are right!

new assembly experience... what do you reckon to this one?
by purrpurr inok so aparently there was this young girl who wanted to study with the jw's because she loved the bible so much.
she asked her fathers permission but he refused, after much nagging though he said she could have a study if she was prepared to have one of her fingers chopped off.
he thought the is would stop her but she was willing so he got a knife and cut off one of her fingers... a little while later she wanted to attend the meetings and he said no and again when nagged said she could attend meetings if she had another finger chopped off so she agreed and he chopped off a second finger.
