My father would keep it quiet for about a year. Then he would tell my mother or me details of committee meetings.

When I first became a witness, I remember hearing about the "apostate" Schnell and that he'd written a book against the Witnesses. I though, "How horrible!" Now I wish I'd read it--would have saved me decades of anguish.

How many Memorials have you attended and missed?
by JH insince 1987, i must have went to about 16 memorials and missed about 5.

Went to my first Memorial in 1953 (there were 3 partakers in our congregation). Never missed one since. Not even in 2007 even though I hadn't been to a meeting for 7 months. Clyde didn't go for the second year in a row. This year I'm probably not going to go although it would be interesting to see how many attend and if anyone partakes of the emblems considering the new "light." Last year I was pleasantly surprised that the KH was far from full. I counted about 30 empty seats. Other years, they had to set up extra chairs and sit people in the library.

I think the noose just tightened a bit.
by 5go inwe had an interesting local needs.. first it clearly stated if you are not making all the meetings you will not make it in to the new system period no exceptions.
they twisted the story of the red sea to make an example.
saying you can not disobey once, or else you be left stuck in the bottom of the red sea.. from now on the elders will be making shepherding calls on those that are not attending regularly.. also, it was stated that if you know of any not attending regularly.

Not obeying the elders is very serious. Word for word quote from the last DC that I attended (2006):
"Disobeying the elders is the same as divination and idolatry." I couldn't believe my ears, but I was taking notes.

AUTO SENSORY OVERLOAD....
by nomoreguilt inmaybe i'm too sensitve or perhaps i'm just overwehlmed.
have you ever had this feeling?
i feel so much compassion for the individuals that, like myself, have finally realized how badly we have been misled.

There really is a lot to absorb. You've come a long way in two months.
When I first came aboard I read almost everything--I lurked for quite awhile. Finally decided I was addicted to the board and tried to stop. That lasted about a week. Now I don't get too emotional about anything. My motive now is to find out what's new, what's the latest? I'm always looking for anything that would give some hope that the WT is losing its grip on its members--don't read many of the fluff posts. When it comes to advice, there is always someone out there who can give better advice, so I stay quiet unless something just hits a nerve.
BTW, how was your party?

Classic WT quotes from 2007
by Bonnie_Clyde inhere's my favorite: .
"these millions have been learning the righteous and just ways of jehovah, and as a result, worldwide they enjoy a unity that is cemented by christian love.
their unity is the most pronounced and enduring in the history of the world, a unity exceeding anything experienced by satan's subjects.

Thanks for your input - I'm sure we will have some more good ones in 2008 as well.

What do JW's do to help the poor & needy at this time of year, or ever?
by Must obey! injust about every church i know of does something for the poor and needy around this time of year, who are not necessarily christians or members of their church.
from helping prisoners to delivering food hampers to visiting the lonely and elderly to helping poor people and children overseas, most churches i'm aware of do at least something to materially help the suffering in the community, home and abroad, regardless of their religious orientation.
many of these churches have programmes providing such assistance all year around, even many catholic churches.. but what do the jw's do to actually practically help the suffering and poor at this time of year, or ever?

It's their boasting that they care about the poor, their talking about it, and then not doing anything about it, that bugs me.
This is the primary reason I gave up on the JW organization. I saw this with my mother when she got sick and the almost total lack of interest from the congregation. I talked to people in other congregations and found out they had similar situations.
I also noticed that the WT would give an experience of someone who showed unselfish loving interest in someone and would cite the experience as an example of how our organization operates. I realized this was by far the exception--not the rule--and it was not because of the organization but despite the organization. It burned me that the organization took credit anytime there was a positive experience. Once in a great while there would be an article in the WT about how we should help the needy and sick, but the following service meeting was all about the preaching work.
About the same time I saw an article in our local newspaper about a church in the area who organized a Saturday morning to have their parishoners go to the home of one of their elderly members. A large group raked the lawn, washed windows, and did anything else that was needed to help this person. I thought--well JW's couldn't do that on a Saturday morning (got to place magazines), and by afternoon they would be too tired or be busy with other concerns.

Last night Clyde, myself, our son and daughter-in-law attended a fund-raiser spaghetti dinner for a young man in our community who has cancer. We were amazed at the crowds that came to the dinner and contributed substantial amounts to help him pay his medical bills. They also sold tickets and there was a raffle with half going to the cancer victim and half to the winner. My son was asked to do the drawing. When he read the number on the winning ticket, no one responded. After a minute, he said, "Well let's draw another ticket." Then a voice from the back of the room (a 75-year old retired teacher) said, "Well I guess I have the winning ticket. I wasn't going to say anything because I wanted all the money to go back to the young man." The only reason this man spoke up was that he saw they were going to pick an alternate winner.
Afterwards, our son and daughter-in-law commented, "So JW's think they are the most wonderful people in the world? Hardly!"
Question - what do we do even for one of our own members in similar situations?
