Sorry - I was referring to the Stanley Theater assembly hall in New Jersey, I believe. I have a picture around here somewhere but wouldn't know how to post it if I could find it. I was reminded of this theater the other day when I got a travel brochure from a travel agency that sells tours to Bethel, Stanley Theater and the Holocaust Museum in DC. It specifically mentioned the chandeliers and stained glass.they proudly point to their assembly hall in Jersey hall with their chandeliers and stained glass windows.
Where is this KH? Are there any pix?

Society's view of stained glass windows
by Bonnie_Clyde inback in the 50's the society used to criticize the churches for their stained glass windows.
now they proudly point to their assembly hall in jersey hall with their chandeliers and stained glass windows.
i know there are a number of kingdom halls with stained glass too.. i think few congregations owned their kingdom halls in the 50's.

Thank you Yknot for the references. I can't count the times when we drove past a church in the 50's I'd hear some comment about stained glass windows.

So she prayed to God: "I don't know who you are... , but I know you're there. Please let me know you!" A short while later, Jehovah's Witnesses visited her and gave her the comĀfort and knowledge she had sought.
And if the Mormons had called, she would have thought they were the answer to her prayer.

I think few congregations owned their Kingdom Halls in the 50's. In our area we rented a room at a hotel and later rented a dance hall (it was above a saloon), and that's where the meetings were held until we bought some property and built our own KH in 1959. Up till then we were so proud that we weren't commercialistic like the churches--with their "stained glass windows." Now we just don't talk about it.

Did You NOT Do Certain Things For People Because U Had To Get Your Time In?
by minimus ini knew many people that were in need of assistance within the congregation that never got helped because the "friends" were more focused on getting their field service time in as opposed to helping those within the "brotherhood".
were you one of those ever in need that got ignored because the brothers and sisters were more involved in "theocratic" pursuits?.
were you one of those that routinely ignored the needy because you had more important spiritual responsibilities to take care of?.

I chose to auxilliary pioneer in March 1984. The last day of the month (Saturday) still had to get a few hours in. My father called and said my JW uncle was sick and wouldn't last much longer. I thought, I'll go see him tomorrow--April 1. He was surrounded by family that Saturday afternoon, but I wasn't there because I was too busy getting service time in--felt I had an obligation. I vowed that I would never pioneer again. Wish I had quit field circus altogether, but it was another 14 years.

Banned expressions= Pioneers abused me for saying "that sucks or peeved"!
by Witness 007 inyes as a young man on 20 out witnessing with the special pioneers one brother said his bible study wasn't home...."oh that sucks" said i......well, you would have thought i said "that sucks balls" three pioneers completely freak out and as a "trinity" start telling me off...i didn't think it was a swear word....anyone else?.
once the c.o used the term "peeved off" during his talk...well, everyone did research on the word to see if it was the same as "pissed off.

We are truly sorry about your loss. I just reread Ian's biography, and I remember all his posts were just as caring and sincere. I'm glad that most of his family were able to get out from the tyranny. I personally have found more love and happiness although I, too, have a daughter who shuns.

Mat 18 & Jesus Says To Lay Bare The Sins of the Sinner To The Congregation
by minimus inso says a woman in the news who is "sinfully" living with her boyfriend.
she has become a marked woman and now the church tells her, after she left the group that they are still going to announce to the congregation how she has sinned, in harmony with jesus' direction in matthew 18.....sound familiar?
?.

The only difference between this Grace group and JWs is that they are going to announce her specific (sexual) sin. JWs simply give a talk (wink wink) about the wrongdoing after the announcement has been made.
It's interesting to trace the history of JWs DF announcements.
At first they did say "John Smith has been disfellowshipped on the grounds of fornication (or whatever)" Then years later they announced "John Smith has been disfellowshipped for conduct unbecoming a Christian" Then years later they announced "John Smith has been disfellowshipped" Then years later, now, they announce "John Smith is no longer one of Jehovah's Witnesses".
Mongolia - I remember every one of those changes including the one where they named the specific sin. Must have changed for legal reasons.

This was wonderful. It's so refreshing that people (at the least the ones I've read so far) did not let their negative experience deny the Christ.

When you meet witnesses you know on the street...
by Newborn in...do you greet them, just to make them feel uncomfortable?.
i'm thinking i may even give them a hug to give them some of "the devils spirit", but maybe that's too evil.

Clyde and I always greet them warmly. Clyde stops quite often for a cup of coffee, and lots of time a carload of witnesses come in. I can't count the number of times he quietly picks up their tab and sometimes it's a lot more than just coffee. They don't know what to think. They think of him as not only inactive but slightly dangerous spiritually, but they can't deny his kindness. Maybe that's what's keeping the elders from hounding us.
