Selfish/Selfless acts......... which?

i have a cousin, who i feel, was greatly responsible for me ceasing to believe in jw teachings.

besides showing me the "light" he is a very wise and kind person and deserves my respect.. he always stressed that humans are inhently selfish.

while i was a jw i quickly passed his thoughts as being too independant of "god".

Don't you know all humans are selfish, except JW's of course. The 12-1-04 WT gives an example of a man who owns a real estate business who found a cash box in the one of the houses he was going to sell with $82,000 in it. He was all alone in the house and could easily have taken the money. But he didn't and explained it was because he was one of Jehovah's Witnesses. The article went on to infer that the worldly people would have taken the cash.

My feeling is that most people are honest. I remember reading a similar article in the Awake a few years go about the honesty of a witness who returned someone's wallet and it was only because he was one of Jehovah's Witnesses. A few weeks later I inadvertently left my purse in a grocery cart outside the store, and later got a call that they had my purse. When I picked up the purse, I asked for the name of the person who returned my purse so I could reward him/her. They said it was no big deal. They had three or four purses returned everyday. I thought to myself then, must be a lot of JW's hanging around the parking lot as no worldly person would have returned them.

Convention and Assembly Food Service

well, a post from low-key lysmith on another topic got me thinking about the less than memorable food at the conventions and assemblies.

anyone have some thoughts to share?.

i missed the ham and cheese on rye-- it was one item that was actually pretty good.

This is what I miss the most about conventions. Working in the cafeteria gave us a sense of commeraderie that has totally disappeared. At the time, it somehow made up for the nonsense that we had to listen to during the sessions. In fact, some of the brothers got to miss all or part of the sessions because of having to work in the cafeteria. The new "simplified" arrangement assured that no one would have to miss the "spiritual" food.

Now that I am no longer attending meetings I have an urge to become part of something. The other day when my husband and I were driving by a church, I remarked how much fun it must be for the parishioners when they have bake sales, outings, and other activities. Wish we could become part of something, but we would be DF'd for sure. Not ready for that yet.

damn it, if they don't have anything new to study, why not move some of the other meetings' material to this hour thus making shorter those other meetings???!!!

of course not, for this move would be too simple yet smart and full of common sense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Blondie's right! The 2,300 days has changed at least twice. Russell believed the 2,300 days were years and that it started about 455 B.C. and ended about 1846. Fred Franz believed the 2,300 days were literal and started in the late 1920's, I think 1928, and ended in 1934(?). (I'll have to get out my "Your Will Be Done" book. The Daniel's Prophecy book has it starting in 1938 and ending in 1944.

But it's a good thing we're going through the book again as we will have it confirmed that the League of Nations, succeeded by the United Nations, is the "disgusting thing."

Questions to ask Ray Franz?

i would like some feedback as to any questions you all may have(i have a bunch of my own) of which i will post next sunday night.

please keep them as short as possible so i,m not carrying a whole book when i go.

I have great admiration and respect for the man, but that doesn't mean that I deify him. It's my understanding that Ray's wife, Cynthia, was never disfellowshipped although I believe she is in harmony with Ray. I would like to know a little more about her and what her reaction was to the debacle back in 1981 and what her family's reaction might have been. My biggest concern is that Ray and Cynthia are OK financially and have thought of making a donation, though can't afford a lot.

after reading the posts about the witnesses who attended the kingdom hall on the east side of the island in sri lanka and were not affected by the tsunami, and the story about the two brothers who were in service up in the mountains instead of sunbathing and they were spared, made me think of a couple of articles i read in the wt several years ago.

one was about a tornado in elkhart, indiana.

it may have been the palm sunday tornado of 1964. the witnesses who attended the meeting were safe, but some who did not attend were killed.

After reading the posts about the witnesses who attended the Kingdom Hall on the east side of the island in Sri Lanka and were not affected by the tsunami, and the story about the two brothers who were in service up in the mountains instead of sunbathing and they were spared, made me think of a couple of articles I read in the WT several years ago.

One was about a tornado in Elkhart, Indiana. It may have been the Palm Sunday tornado of 1964. The witnesses who attended the meeting were safe, but some who did not attend were killed. The WT clearly implied that those at the Kingdom Hall had Jehovah's protection, and I really believed it. My mindset was shattered a few years later when I read aboutt a mudslide. It may have been in Mexico or perhaps South America--doesn't matter. As I remember it, the brothers who fled downhill to seek refuge in the Kingdom Hall perished but those who fled uphill out of the path of the mudslide survived.

I've tried doing a search for these articles but can't find them. Can anyone help?

Also, my husband read an article about three days ago about Catholics who felt they were spared because they were in church when the disaster hit. I asked him to save the article, but he forgot to.

We watched this last night. It was a two-hour long program. It talked about how people of every generation have felt that they lived in special times. It showed lots of different religions that believe that Armageddon is coming very soon and that true believers will be in paradise. It mentioned Jimmy Jones and David Koresh. Finally, they talked about William Miller and his failed prediction in 1843 and how people even sold their homes and possessions believing that the end was coming on a certain day. It continued briefly with the Adventists, but Jehovah's Witnesses were never mentioned. I couldn't believe it. If you believe the Watchtower, we are the only ones proclaiming the end of the system--very soon.

Opinions on Age of Baptismal Candidates

i am sure i am not the only one that thinks it's ridiculous that they allow pre-teens and young teens to get baptized.

i know now that i did not have a full understanding of the implications of baptism.

i did it primarily because that's what was expected.

When my son was about 17, one of the sisters at our hall asked me why my son wasn't baptized. I told her that he apparently wasn't ready. She said he should get baptized as that was a "protection." I said, "Jesus wasn't baptized till he was thirty years old." She didn't say anything more, but at the next service meeting one of the elders mentioned that we should never take the attitude that a person has to wait til they are thirty to get baptized. You can tell that I got reported. Anyway, my son did get baptized at age 18. However (years later) the sister and the elder are no longer attending meetings. My son goes to very few meetings. He is married with a family and I really believe he and his wife have one of the happiest marriages that I know of. I asked him the other day if he knew of any happy marriages in the congregation, and he said, yes, the ones who go to very few meetings.

i stumbled accross this ancient booklet "neutrality of jehovah's witnesses" which is a re print of the watchtower november 1st 1939 .

note the rhetorical question at the top of the page , and the answer given at the foot of page 22 and over to 23 .

that statement shocked me !

The attitude still prevails. I heard Samuel Herd (governing body member) at at circuit assembly say that if your mother is df'd, you would have as little contact with her as possible. I bet that many witnesses would use it as an excuse not to even care for the physical needs of their mother.

Have JW's and Born-Agains been taking for a ride with Armaggeddon/Rapture?

i have been seriously thinking that jw's and born-again christians have both been victims of the armaggeddon/rapture merry go round.

christians have been looking for the rapture for 2000 years and still nothing has happened.

jw's have been looking for armaggeddon for over 130 years now and still nothing has happened.
