Guess I've been away too long - from the service meetings about four years. What is the "BE" reference, obviously a WT publication.

Other than children getting baptized, I wonder if the increase in the USA could be the result of the push now to learn a foreign language so that we can witness to foreigners that come into the country. I heard a comment from the platform at a circuit assembly that many foreigners were listening to the message who would not have listened in their native country.
I personally know of several sisters who pride themselves in mastering a new language. In fact there is a congregation in our circuit that has a meeting in Chinese. I know they feel they really have God's blessing, and they are really shown a lot of attention, especially at circuit assemblies. Kind of keeps their minds busy in the same way the the Quick Build Kingdom Halls kept people busy so they wouldn't have time to look at anything outside of the organization.

My daughter overheard my father, an elder, reveal some confidential information to my mother. She went to the elders and he nearly lost his servant's position. That might have stopped him for awhile, but over the years, especially since my mother's death, he has leaked out plenty of information to me--just in the course of conversation.

Why did they change the sterilization beliefs?
by mkr32208 ini posted this on another thread but it suddenly seemed more important and i wanted to get some opinions!
i was still a dub when sterilization changed from a consciences matter to a no-no.
i remarked to my wife at the time that i thought the reason for this was a declining membership!

I believe the article on sterilization was about 1999. Don't have my CD available, but I remember it was shortly after I started surfing the Internet. Actually, sterilization has been wrong for a long time. There was an article--maybe late sixties or early seventies, and most witnesses followed the counsel. I don't remember any articles that every said it was OK, it was just that it wasn't talked about, and gradually some of the witnesses began to use sterilization, probably not realizing that it had been condemned years earlier.
When the article you mentioned came out, I couldn't believe how identical the thinking was to the article (probably 30 years earlier). Even back then I couldn't understand how a woman mutilating a man's genitals during a fight (thus destroying his ability to reproduce) was the same as allowing a voluntary procedure to prevent childbirth and possible economic hardship on the family.
I predict that if nothing is said for another 25 years that it will become acceptable again.

my mother, when leaving the org.

Thousands of children have been born on September 11. Yours was in 2004? I anticipate there will be thousands more children born this coming September 11 and in the years to come.

WT 3-1-05 - Bible sets precedent for receiving governmental aid?
by Bonnie_Clyde inpage 27 - under "jehovah's word is alive," it comments on chapter 2, verse 2: "ruth wanted to take advantage of the provision of gleaning made for the benefit of the foreigners and the afflicted.
she was humble at heart.
a needy christian should not be too proud to accept the loving assistance of fellow believers or any governmental aid he or she may qualify for.".

She was humble at heart. A needy Christian should not be too proud to accept the loving assistance of fellow believers or any governmental aid he or she may qualify for."
First of all, Ruth wasn't given any handout. The crops were left at the edge of the field so that the "foreigners and afflicted" would have something to eat, but they had to work for it, and they had to work hard.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not totally against governmental aid if there is truly a need. However, the witnesses often accept it too easily. I know witnesses who could work but are receiving governmental aid as that is the easiest way to finance their pioneering. A visiting speaker recently talked about a brother who moved to where the
greater are neededthe need is greater intending to get a job, but upon finding out there were none available, went on governmental aid. He had a job before he left for his new location. Why didn't he go back? -

Two types of elder?????
by chuckyy inits my experience after actually being an elder for a number of years that there are in fact...two types of elder.. type 1....genuine, actually cares about the people in the congregation and wasn't actually bothered too much if he became an elder or not.. type 2....very legalistic, cares more about organizational laws rather than people and lacks compassion and empathy.
this type is more of a spiritual policeman.
he wanted desperately to be an elder and now that he is, he loves the sense of power and prestige.. this has been my experience and if there are more type 2 elders on a body, the results can be disastrous.. what has been your experience???

The organization doesn't like Type 1 elders very well. A few years ago a friend of ours was the PO of a small rural congregation in our circuit, and he organized a group to go to the home of an elderly couple on a Saturday morning to help cut firewood so they could keep their house warm. They actually skipped "field service" that morning. He viewed it that they were rendering a service to the elderly couple. Well he actually got removed because he wasn't putting the preaching work first.

Watchtower Aug. 15, 1968 says to ignore Jesus about tthe time of the end..
by AloneinOh intalking about 1975 and the push by the society got me to looking at some older quotes.
this one here really bugged me and still pisses me off when i read it.
in this instance they are telling you to forget about jesus and listen to the society.

I have to the conclusion that there is a malady in the Organization called "collective amnesia."
Our circuit overseer in the early 1970's stated from the platform on two separate visits, "The Society was not wrong about 1914 and it will not be wrong about 1975." Now many will say oh well, that was just one circuit overseer. I've since learned that CO's and DO's all over the country (and the world?) were talking about 1975. If they were acting on their own initiative, why didn't the Society call them in and severely chastize them? It was because they got their information from the Society's service department.
My husband (that's Clyde by the way) says that Armageddon did come in 1975--and it wasn't all bad.

For those who say that nobody thought 1975 was a big deal, imagine what it was like when we got the August 1, 1968, Watchtower and saw the "Coming in the Next Issue", the title, "Why Are You Looking Forward to 1975?" Then we anxiously wait for the August 15 issue. Then for two weeks we study this magazine. Yes, I was there, and I know it was a big deal. What would you think if the next Watchtower had an article, "Why Are You Looking Forward to 2012?" Or for that matter, 2034?
