I knew a pioneer sister back in 1962 who took a part-time job at a church to support herself in the ministry. She even witnessed to the pastor.

Good Health Insurance
by feelinsketchy ini found the "blood" letter read at the service meeting last week a little laughable, especially the part about getting a good health insuarance policy.
how out of touch can the writers of this letter be?
how does a whole generation of self employed janitors and window washers find good health insurance.

This type of thing has bothered me over the years even while still a loyal witness. First the admonition to not get an education, to simplify our lives, to give up opportunities to work overtime. To do otherwise is materialistic. Clyde and I struggled hard to raise our three children, to keep bread on the table, to make sure they they had proper health care so we didn't have to be a burden on anyone. Clyde is now partially disabled, he's not qualified yet for Medicare, but our health insurance premiums have skyrocketed so high that it takes more than half of our income. I'm self employed so don't have any company benefits. Yet the Watchtower is harping more and more on us--simplify, simplify so that you can pioneer. They don't simplify, they have good health insurance that they don't have to dish out thousands of dollars out of their pocket. Then they turn around and give us sound advice. "Get good health insurance."

One of the parts I liked the best was how the pigs made laws for the animals to live by which were reasonable, but one by one the laws were changed in a way that would benefit only the pigs, and then it was made to look like it was that way all along.
Example: The 1st and 2nd commandment "Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy" and "Whatever goes on four legs and has wings is a friend" was changed to "Four legs good, Two legs better." The 4th commandment, "No animal shall sleep in a bed" was changed to "No animal was to sleep in a bed with sheets." The 5th commandment, "No animal shall drink alcohol" was changed to "No animal shall drink alcohol to excess." The 6th commandment, "No animal shall kill another animal" was changed to, "No animal shall kill another animal without cause." The 7th commandment, "All animals are equal" was changed to, "All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others." Also the 3rd commandment, "No animal shall wear clothes," was broken by the pigs with no explanation.
What analogy can we find here with the Governing Body? The one I can think of right now is, "No Christian may take a blood" was changed to "No Christian may take blood unless it is a fraction."

It is my understanding that the HLC will only go to bat for active, regular publishers. This was told to me about 10 years ago by my half-brother who was HLC member. He said HLC would not help "low hour" publishers.
In our congregation a sister who had not been to a meeting for three years had surgery. She never got visits from the elders. However, on the day that she had her surgery an HLC member spent the entire day at the hospital and spent a great deal of time talking with doctors and others. I'm sure he counted his time.
How that she's back home, I would be very surprised if she ever had a visit.

some of the things listed below are things that normal people take for granted.
some are the most basic of human desires.

OUTRAGEOUS STATEMENTS
by bonnzo inthe following are some outrageous statements made at my last service meeting.
the part was the first installment of the new om book, "organized to do jehovah's will".
1) when discussing the difference in jehovah's organization and worldly organizations, the conductor remarked that the "higher you go up in jah's org., the more humble people are".

We're all equal. Just some are more equal than others.
BTW, since I only go to the meetings every other Sunday and haven't been a publisher for over five years, do you think they will give me a copy of the OM book if I ask for it at the literature counter. It would be embarrassing to ask and be told that I don't qualify.

Days of the week
by DannyBloem inas jw's always believed that the days of the week came from god, this is probably not true.
the week is a pagan symbol.. that a week has seven days can best be explained by astronomy.
there are 7 heavenly bodies: sun, moon, and 5 visible planets.

The Golden Age 13 March, 1935, page 38, published a calendar that was invented by Clayton Woodworth (one of the directors of the WT Society). He decided that the days of the week and the months of the year were from the Devil. The days of the week were listed as: Lightday, Heavenday, Earthday, Starday, Lifeday, Mansday, Godsday. The months of the year were: Redemption, Life, Visitment, Freedom, Vindication, Hope, King, Peace, Order, Logos, Jehovah, Temple. The new calendar year was to start with the crucifixion of Christ.
This is detailed on pages 66-68 of "Apocalypse Delayed" by James Penton. Penton commented, "Fortunately, Judge Rutherford had the good sense never to allow Woodworth's theocratic calendar to be used."
Can you imagine the ramifications if they had tried?
