can one of the resident scholars settle a disagreement about the current jw practice of "marking"?.
my understanding is that marking works this way: suppose annie is a jw who persists in an activity that is strongly frowned upon by the society--but is not a df-ing offense (for example, she is dating a non-witness), then annie gets counseled by the elders.
if annie continues to date the unbeliever, then the elders may decide to "mark" her.
Clyde is good friends with a long-standing JW. He was a PO for many years and now a widower in his 80's. I won't go into great detail, but will just say that Clyde has truly been his best friend in every way.
About a year ago, two elders half his age took him aside at the hall and counselled him to stop associating with Clyde as he was "bad association." I guess you would call that marking.
i heard it was in some 1980 mag but i don't know where.

I think that by 1980 they noticed that the number of publishers was dropping, and they had to do something. I believe Ray Franz had a comment on this, but don't have time to look it up.
i was born in and left the religion as soon as i left home at 18. i had to move 70 miles away from my family and friends to do a 'slow fade'.
i lock the thoughts of how i was brought up, the religion itself and the failed prophecies away because i get wound up and distressed if i dwell on it too much.
stupid i know but i cannot get rid of it.
Something similar with my mother's 105th birthday. All I did was buy a cake from the grocery store and asked them to write "Happy Birthday, Mom." I was turned in by my daughter. Lo and behold! I was counselled by two elders. I talked my way out of it, but I will never again allow them to meet with me.
i always thought the process of using a funeral home was morbid and i always wondered why people couldn't be set out in their living room for visitation with family and friends.
i thought it was the law that you had to use them but i guess it isn't after all.
i wonder how many people will start opting for home?
No funeral at home. But the best thing I ever heard of was the pre-funeral of my ophtamologist. Knowing that he had terminal cancer, the family arranged a "Celebration of Life and Love" inviting friends and relatives all over the country. It was held at the local funeral home but the good doctor was there in his wheelchair. I didn't attend, but the story was written up in the local paper. I know this wouldn't work for everyone, but I can't imagine a more loving way to honor this wonderful man who had brought so much joy to his family, friends and community.
reading the recent posts about medical emergancies made me think of this.. we would always hear how the society put so much care into the planning of the conventions, but i remember showing up on a friday morning and there was no room prepared for nursing moms or diaper changing.after asking around i was finally pointed to a dark storage room at the end of a hallway.
there were stacks of boxes sitting around & a few folding chairs leaning against a wall.
the whole place was covered in dead cockroaches & rat poop and smelled of rodent urine.

And seriously, if I had to be fully exposed to feed my hungry baby in front of thousands of people I really don't care. My hungry baby is my foremost concern. And I have no intention of waiting til get to whatever room I'm supposed to be at to feed her."
I did this 35 years ago. Somehow I don't remember mother's rooms back then--it's been so long. I always nursed my baby in my seat. I used a very light weight thermal blanket to cover up with, but sometimes baby would reach up and pull it down--no problem. I would lay a blanket down on the concrete floor to change the diaper. So proud that I missed very little of the session.

i posted this a couple of weeks ago--upset that the df'd daughter couldn't give the 50th anniversary party for her parents.
i thought that the daughter and her brother would not be invited, but i was wrong.
she was not only there, but her df'd brother drove over 1,000 miles in his motor home hoping to see his parents.

Don't know the whole story. There was something about having some grandkids with them, and they were bringing them back. I'm hoping that Grandma had a chance to talk to her son and daughter.
I was happy that my friend, the sister-in-law of the couple, invited the whole family, including those that were disfellowshipped. Oooh! I wonder if this will get to the elders. Well, there were no (active) witnesses there.

I posted this a couple of weeks ago--upset that the DF'd daughter couldn't give the 50th anniversary party for her parents. It was given by the sister-in-law instead. I thought that the daughter and her brother would not be invited, but I was wrong. She was not only there, but her DF'd brother drove over 1,000 miles in his motor home hoping to see his parents. Lots of other "worldly" relatives showed up from out of state bringing gifts. Well the party started at noon, and the golden anniversary couple didn't show up. Everyone was stunned, and there was plenty of conversation about how Grandpa didn't want anything to do with his DF'd children. Finally, about 5 p.m. Grandpa and Grandma decided to drop in. Clyde and I weren't there, but I heard their children stayed out of the way and never had a conversation with their parents--at least with Grandpa. I understand that the Grandma was upset and wanted to see her kids. I hope she did. What a nasty situation....

the past three weeks having been so stressful and very sad.
my ex husband died after being in hospital for just over a week in intensive care.. i was just 18 and he was 21 when we first met and after a whirlwind romance we married 6 months later and have two sons together who are now adults.
although our marriage ended after 25 years and i remarried 7 years ago, he was my first love and i knew him for most of my life.
Maddie, so sorry. Hard to believe they would treat you this way, and you are not even DF'd.
Just pray that they will someday come to their senses.
I'm disappointed in all (most) of you.
