My Story

so, i joined just yesterday after coming across this forum looking at beth sarim, and i though that i would share my story with you.

it will no doubt be very similar to a lot of others, but it's a way of getting to know me at least.. i was brought up as witness from the age of 4 years old, my dad picked up the 'truth' from one of his friends in the pub and it seemed to go from there, he would quickly get baptised and progress to becoming a ministerial servant and then an elder.

from a young age i wanted to be like my dad and become a pioneer, a ministerial servant and then an elder... perhaps even becoming a co. the world, spiritually speaking, was my oyster.

Welcome mate!

You are amongst people who all respect one another's personal journey. That is something we never got to do as witnesses - respect others personal choices and journeys

You sound like many of us who went through the steps of being "a perfect witness child". Now as adults, we get to use our own logical thinking skills to determine our own values and life choices.

And in most cases, we become even BETTER people that we were as witnesses! Unlike the stuff the society spews out, we DO NOT become wicked, selfish sinners. No, we actually become kinder, more caring and less judgemental.

a random thought occurred to me today.. i actually feel genuinely sorry for witnesses who cut contact with ones they feel are no longer "spiritual" .. they do this based not on anything that the person has actually done to them personally, but due to an imposed view from the society.. it must play havoc with their inner conscience as they try and reconcile that the person they cut off has not actually done anything to harm them, but they have to view them as evil.. it reminded me of this thread i started some time back.

That reminded me of the comments said by one of the Gb in a talk once: "now, unlike the Isrealite days, we cant stone rebellious people...but we can DF them"

It was almost like they WISHED they COULD stone them!

a random thought occurred to me today.. i actually feel genuinely sorry for witnesses who cut contact with ones they feel are no longer "spiritual" .. they do this based not on anything that the person has actually done to them personally, but due to an imposed view from the society.. it must play havoc with their inner conscience as they try and reconcile that the person they cut off has not actually done anything to harm them, but they have to view them as evil.. it reminded me of this thread i started some time back.

Yes, I still treat all individuals the same way. I hold nothing against any witness.

It just amazes me that they on the other hand feel justified or even compelled to treat us like we have done something wrong. All in fact we have done is research the "truth". In fact we are the ones who need support, as we have been rocked by the facts we have discovered.

Ah well...cults will act like cults I guess.

If the principle from the bible supposedly said by Jesus is to be abided by, then there is no room for witnesses to be "non-practising gays"

They say "you cant even think it in your heart". This has nothing to do with acting on those desires.

So the premise said above that a "gay" person can be so but just cant practice it is false.

As a witness once said "you cant be a racist in your heart, because God still knows your thoughts, and one day you will act on those feelings anyway"

So the Elders want to get together, and I kinda want to.

so the wife and i were uninvited to another jw get together which we didn't want to go to anyways.

finally we find out that something on my facebook account is getting some people's in my old halls undies in a bunch.

so i was thinking of meeting with them to at least clear my wife's name and give them some much needed hell.

Ensure that appropriate boundaries are respected!

You should never feel forced or compelled into anything that you don't wish to be involved with. That includes a railroaded meeting with elders.

If such a meeting does occur though, turn the tables, and instead of sitting there waiting for them to dictate the discussion and direction the meeting takes, you take control.

Imagine if you said right at the beginning "ok thanks for meeting together so and so..., now I'd like to start with a prayer, then I'll outline the matter of discussion. Please bow your heads now...." etc....

Watch them explode with rage that you show disdain for their "power and authority"!

having seen many, many people leave the org over the years, i have to say that, when it comes to married couples, it's almost always the man who makes the first move to leave.

conversely, when it comes to being converted into the witnesses, more often than not it's the wife who joins up first.

although that wasn't the case with my own parents, my father became converted and my mother followed very reluctantly..

If the woman stays in, she enjoys the sympathy and support from all who pity her "terrible" situation having to live with an evil apostate or faded husband...

That "poor soul" routine works wonders for many "sisters"
