The LJW@W (local JW at work) accepted a holiday bonus, and a giftwrapped box of assorted cheeses, which he immediately proceeded to eat (the cheese, that is).

Band To Band - Mapping the Music Genome.
by hillary_step inmusicians have a habit of borrowing each other, or moving onto new bands as their careers develop.
this site is attempting to map the 'music genome' where it comes to musicians, a unique concept and a very interesting way of tracking down discographies.. http://bandtoband.com/.

In the film "School of Rock" Jack Black had a diagram on a blackboard which pretty much showed the "evolution" of rock music as various sub-genres developed from jitterbug, swing, country and jazz roots.

A ship or boat which has no rudder, and no motor or sail to provide power is in serious trouble in bad weather. Waves tend to turn "long" objects so that they are parallel to the waves, which makes them very likely to turn over. Ships are safest therefore when they can turn their bow to face directly into oncoming waves, however this is not always possible with a sail-driven vessel, and impossible if there is no rudder. The second best position is to point away from the waves and "run before the wind", which is what a sail-driven ship WITH a rudder would do in a storm, likely aided by a sea-anchor to help provide additional drag in the stern and hold it facing the waves. A rectangular box with no rudder and no sail would soon be turned so that its long side would be broadside to the waves, and be flipped Poseidon style.

There used to be a high-quality American car known as a Packard. When asked how well made their product was, their standard reply was "Ask the man who owns one". With this in mind, find the Consumer Reports 2007 Buyers Guide and read the reliability ratings which are taken from a survey mailed to subscribers of Consumer Reports. My advice is to pick the most reliable car from the ones you are considering. Not sure how much performance difference there is between the particular BMW and the particular Toyota you are thinking about, but people who have owned them say Toyotas are significantly more trouble-free than BMWs. Interesting reading, as owners of most German cars report vastly more problems than owners of any Toyota. It seems that a high-priced car is not always more reliable. High reliability marks for most Honda and Nissan products as well, and also the Jeep Wrangler (one of the highest ratings for any American vehicle, and again, much less troublesome than most German cars.

I try to view people as individuals, but do see many who seem to try very hard to fit into a particular "gender role", and some who apparantly do so without trying at all. Unfortunately, these people also expect OTHERS to also fit into roles, and this can cause problems if the other person doesn't want to fit into a predetermined role.

An Abortion question, a Christian paradox?
by free2beme ini have expressed this question to many of my christian friends and heard a mix of answers.
each time, they come from the central feeling they have about christianity, and few come from the bible's view.
here is the question, in regards to abortion.. as it is taught in traditional christianity, to kill a life is to mean you are worthy of death yourself.

There are some studies which indicate that since Roe vs. Wade, the drop in violent crime observed in many large cities is directly due to the absence of those who would have grown up unwanted and unloved, and turned to a life of crime. I would expect a Christian would deny this, or attribute it to other factors. I would say that, rather than a right to life, every child should have a right to be loved. If a potential parent isn't prepared to give a child that love, then they should choose to not be a parent. Because a life without love is a life not worth living.

Saying I love you foreign languages
by BlackSwan of Memphis inhey all, i could really use some help.. i am looking for the proper way a parent might say to their child i love you in these languages.. spanish, french, italian.
i am definitely interested in other languages, gaelic, arabic, russian etc.
but many languages involved alphabet characters i am not familiar with.. i do know that there are online translators, babelfish etc.but i have found out the hard way, those are really not reliable, and i need to know as specifically as possible.. i am finding that unlike the english language, there might be one way to say i love you in a romantic manner and a way to say i love you in friendly, non romantic manner.

Gaiagirl said: "Voulez vous coucher avec moi" literally means "Do you want to go to bed w/me?" Juni Thanks for clarifying that, Juni, I suppose my Belgian friend was trying to politely paraphrase the expression, rather than provide a literal translation.

I used to like "Metal Men", a team of robots made of various metals, whose personalities somewhat matched the properties of their metal body, i.e. Iron was very muscular and athletic, Mercury was prone to rapid changes of mood, Lead was chunky and slow moving, Gold and Platinum were like Greek ideals of male and female mental and bodily perfection, Tin was a wimpy weak little guy. Another very good comic was "Doom Patrol" a team of three misfits led by a guy in a wheelchair, supposedly BEFORE X-men hit the stands. The three members were a robot which housed a human brain, a guy whose "negative" soul could leave his body for up to 60 seconds at a time, and a woman who could grow to gigantic size. Finally, there was the "Spectre", a policeman killed by criminals, who came back as a spirit bent on vengance against all wrongdoers, and who usually made his punishment fit the crime in a very unusual manner. Unlike most "heros", Spectre was pretty much unlimited in his abilities, so there wasn't much a criminal could do once he was targeted.

I've never bought into the idea that a designer name makes clothing worth more. When I wear jeans, I wear Wranglers purchased at Target for less than $20.
