We also had a similar Christmas Eve service at the UU church, with a choir singing carols, and everyone in the congregation holding candles in the semi-darkness. Quite pleasant to hear the voices of everyone joined together.

Not sure if the show was ever recorded, but if so, most likely would be on the thick, brittle, pre-vinyl 78 rpm records of the time. If they still exist and are not actually broken, they could possibly still be played, although I wouldn't expect anything close to CD or even good vinyl quality reproduction.

JWs view of Lord of the Rings VS Harry Potter
by serotonin_wraith ini'm sure this will vary between jw to jw, but their choices are:.
1) they won't watch/read either.. 2) they will only allow lotr, not hp.. 3) they will only allow hp, not lotr.. 4) they will allow both.. in my experience, 3 never happens and 2 happens the most.
with the similar theme of magic, the occult, fantasy and monsters, i wonder what lets them think one is okay and the other is not.

As I remember from LOTR, the story took place in an age so long ago that it has been all but forgotten. Most of the magic was practiced either by figures who closely parallel "prophets" in the Bible, or by the enemies of the primary characters. Gandalf himself is very similar to Moses. So the book actually reads a great deal like a story about God vs. Satan, with different names for the characters. The magic is pretty much neutral in and of itself, and whether it is good or bad depends on who is performing the spell. Harry Potter, on the other hand, has pretty much normal kids living in the present studying magical arts. I suspect WTBTS would have a much greater problem with Harry Potter than with LOTR. WTBTS is rather down on stories which show the use of magic in any form, but there are differing degrees of acceptability. For example, Star Wars was acceptable because the "magic" was referred to as "the Force", and presented as a property of the physical universe (ironically, this is actually close to the way actual wiccans view it). The television show "Bewitched" was NOT acceptable, because the main character identified herself as a Witch, set apart as not even mortal, and her powers were something unique to her race of beings, not even something humans could learn. "The Craft" was not acceptable, because the four girls called on the names of other gods who were clearly not Jehovah. I can't remember ever hearing about "I Dream Of Jeannie", or "Practical Magic", although there must have been something at one time or another.

Major television networks will announce new "reality" shows, as well as new game shows to air in prime time. George W. Bush will continue to loose public support until he quits in shame before his term is up. O.J. Simpson will be found dead under suspicious circumstances, and his accused killer will be acquitted. Kid Rock will beg Pamela Anderson to take him back, to no avail. New Age music will make a stunning comeback, eclipsing all other forms of music, and musicians will scramble to modify their playing styles to conform to the new public taste in pan flutes, electronic synthesizers, rippling water sounds, and harp melodies. Rap music will become virtually extinct, partly because of the above, and partly because its primary target audience will come to view it as vulgar and tasteless. The Artist Formerly Known As Prince will fade into inactivity as a J.W. Mel Gibson will make an epic film about the Cannanites and how they were invaded by the Israelites. Ron Perlman and Selma Blair will star in Hellboy 2 (this is for real).

I believe this is the same show which aired on PBS a few years ago, lots of interviews with scholars, etc. It should be available for purchase on the PBS or NOVA website.

I believe that a 1% increase could be achieved with little more than baptism of JW children who reach the age of 15 years or so. Those of you who still attend, what percentage of your congregation would you estimate consists of unbaptised teens (who potentially might get baptised at a coming assembly)?

Was Andy Kaufmann a JW, or is the thread just about what he would do if he had been, and was DF'd? Perhaps it might be fun to imagine what other comedians might do in similar situations... Steve Martin-Well, EXCUUUUUUUSE MEEEEEEEE!

This reminded me of my genealogical research. I found that my own family had, some time after leaving Africa, lived in France during the 1100's. Some relatives were accused of being heretics and burned, and their property confiscated by the Church. The rest left for safer locales.
