"The Big Empty" an X-files/Twilight Zone sort of film with Jon Favreau, Rachel Leigh Cook, Daryl Hannah, Kelsey Grammer, and several others. "My Neighbor Totoro", just saw this Saturday evening and loved it. "Cosmos", the best science fiction film ever made, IMHO.

A common reply I've heard JW's give when asked to contribute to some charity is "I pay my taxes, there are social programs to help (whatever the cause is).

Not sure what other groups are included in "Modern Rock", (first time I've ever heard this term), but I like a great deal of '80s music, including some of the groups you mentioned.

Will Vinyl Make A Comeback?
by brinjen inwas just flicking through the june issue of 'silicon chip' magazine (yes i'm a geek .
as there is no needle or anything making contact with the record, there is no wear or scratches happening during play.
it replays the sound in analog form, not digital.. http://www.elpj.com/.

I doubt that vinyl will ever regain lost popularity, any more than the old cylinder-shaped records of the 19th century, or the 78 rpm discs of the first part of the 20th century. There will certainly be "collectors" who will enthuse over vinyl, like Steve Buscemi's character in "Ghost World". But as has already been noted, anything you can do with vinyl, you can do better with a CD. Why would anyone want to play vinyl on a $9000 turntable when it will still sound better on a $100 CD player?

THE UNIVERSE - What do you now believe about it?
by Black Man ini was watching this documentary on the various galaxies and it stated that the universe is still expanding, planets are being created as we speak.
it also detailed some of the planets within our solar system and some beyond it and speculated how some were favorable for habitation and that some show evidence of having a water supply.
what do you believe about the universe?

The Universe is not a created "thing" but is organic and therefore has evolved over time, from pure energy at the time of the Big Bang. Gradually, some of the energy condensed to form light, then matter. Currently, we have a dynamic mix of matter and energy which allows for the property we call "life". Life is an intrinsic property of all matter in which matter constantly attempts to achieve higher complexity, up to the limits of available energy and material resources and existing conditions. This property acts everywhere in the Universe, but conditions limit the complexity of matter in some places. Conditions are much more favorable on Earth than on the Moon. Conditions on Mars were once similar to Earth, however Mars lost its oceans and atmosphere, so conditons are not as good as they once were. Biological life may possibly still exist on Mars. There are other places with conditons similar to Earth i.e. liquid water, clement temperatures, where biological life exists. This was recognized by the ancient Greeks, even though they did not have the means to visit those places. Not sure if the Universe is "sentient" or "conscious" however it behaves in a manner similar to a living thing, i.e. it has grown in both size and complexity through time, and some structures could be analagous to "organs".

What if she hadn't eaten the fruit?
by michael downing inbased solely on whats available in the genesis account, what would happen if eve had not eaten the fruit but had continued a relationship with the "serpent" in perpetuity questioning god's motives?
would she be punished for this exercise of free will?.
i ask the question because my personal belief is that if the genesis account is in fact allegory, then what comes after it should be awarded no more acknowledged efficacy that what we prescribe to aesop, confucius or any other pragmatic, non-theistic value-set that has survived history .

Humans do not die because a human ancestor ate a piece of fruit. If this were true, what of the animals who lived in Eden, and did NOT eat the fruit? Why do animals not live forever? Humans die for the same reason every other multicellular being dies. Cell replacement is imperfect, and eventually, sufficent mistakes accumulate that the body doesn't function any longer. It is rare for a human to live to 100, and there is no evidence at all that any human has ever lived to even, say 200 years, let alone 900+ "because they were closer to perfection".

Ridiculous JW superstitions

I actually heard other students repeat the story about men having one less rib when I was in grade school. Even then, I wondered "did they actually LOOK at skeletons of men and women to believe this?"

The Hebrew myth says evil entered the world through the actions of Eve. The Greek myth says evil entered the world through the actions of Pandora. Is there any believe one myth is more true than the other, or for that matter, that either myth is true? I see no such reason.

Universalism
by choosing life ini was talking to a friend who believes that everyone will acieve eternal life eventually.
she used some scriptures that make sense to me.. 1 cor.
15:22 -for as in adam all die, so also in christ, all will be made alive.. rom.8 :38,39- basically states that nothing can seperate us from god's love.. it was kind of refreshing to hear her talk about everyone being important and worthwhile to god.

This is one of the priciples in Unitarian-Universalism, that no one person or group is favored over others in the sight of the divine.

Is this the same Jehovah who was going to bring Armageddon in 1874, uhmm, I mean 1914, oops, make that 1925, that is to say, 1975? I noticed that you used at least 13 exclamation points in the title to your post. Is this the secret to being heard by the the gods, ending our prayers with lots of punctuation?
