What "Rules" Did The Elders In Your KH Make?
by minimus insome congregations were known as liberal and others were considered very conservative.
back in the 1970s a nearby congregation made all speakers who gave public talks a white shirt to wear.
if a speaker came in wearing anything but white they were brought into the library and were given a white shirt!

Just a quick Poll...Do you think the GB is sincere?
by NikL ini've been thinking about this the past few days and curious what the honest consensus is here just for fun.. show of hands,.
is the governing body.... a: completely sincere.
they really do believe what they teach.. b: somewhat sincere.

I would go with somewhat sincere. Being in charge of a billion plus dollar corporation will eventually lead to making some decision or action related strictly to power and/or money. But as the saying goes, tell a lie long enough and you'll eventually believe it. I don't doubt they believe they're own BS. They truly believe they are directed by God due to success. As much as people on this board predict the demise of the watchtower, go back to the beginning of this board, and people were predicting it then, the org keeps growing. Stagnation and even decline can happen but in the long run, it will just keep getting bigger and outlast all of us. Their very existence confirms their belief. -

Aren't you a bit amazed that the WTS/JWS is still around ?
by Finkelstein ini know i am, to me its a bit of a peculiar anomaly that the wts is still around and functioning in reflection of its decades and now complete century that the wts has been bullshitting to people .
organizations like the church of god have shrunk dramatically from its heyday of the 1980's, this too was another organization that spread and grew by publishing its own magazine proclaiming a armageddon soon doctrine and its main publication was called " the truth " .
i'm guessing some of this has to do with the fact that people who get lured into this cult aren't aware of its past, its doctrines, the people who started it and so forth.

The United church of God died because they changed their core doctrines. After Armstrong died they adopted the Trinity doctrine which they were adamantly opposed to as pagan. Something like that change would shake even JW land to the core. Hence they never would change.

What difference would it make? In JW land they would change the teaching and say they don't know how many are going to heaven and the 144,000 are symbolic. They would say the increase in prat takers was Jehovah showing them they were mistaken in their understanding and he refined his slave to the correct teaching. Everyone would chalk it up to new light and a blessing. Anyone who points out that people who partook were considered mentally unstable or whatever the exact wording is from their own literature would be apostates. They can do and change whatever they want.

Have you ever believed something that turned out to be wrong?
by slimboyfat inapart, of course, from the obvious example of believing the evidence-free assertion of the governing body to be god's representatives on earth.
not to side-step that issue, but i wonder if it might be interesting to relate that huge mistake to other things i've been wrong about and how they compare and contrast with the big one.
a couple of examples of things i was wrong about:.

I was a teenager when 9/11 happened. After that I got caught up in believing a lot of 9/11 conspiracies relating to the elite (the rich bankers, federal reserve) planning on changing our entire financial system. I believed they wanted one world government, would change currencies and wanted everything to collapse giving them the ability to do these things. Well 2008 happened where the banks did actually collapse and it was the very people who were supposed to be a part of this New World Order that stopped the collapse. The Fed got us out of it, or at least stopped it from getting worse when they should have allowed everything to go down. The world would have been at its knees. I recently asked this question to someone who still believes in all of this. And his answer was, he didn't know why they didn't let it collapse. Maybe they weren't prepared. I pointed out that since 9/11 the conspiracy theorists have said this is what they're going for and want. 8 years later they had exactly what they wanted and they weren't ready?

Interest rates are up again.
by Fisherman inany economy people here who can explain how this will affect us economy?.

@NewYork44M I can tell you where it ends for the stock market. We very well will probably end up in the largest stock market bubble in history. The market has inflated on the Fed keeping interest rates low. It created artificial bull market runs, and continues to. I have no idea when it will happen but, one day, we go back way down and pay for this drunken party.

Property values are loosely based on interest rates but really depend on demand. Historically higher interest rates hurt property value because they make getting a loan more difficult. To get a buyer home prices are reduced to bring in a buyer that can afford the total loan with the interest rate. In a booming economy though, neither will matter because buyers will buy regardless of the rate.

Rates were just raised .25 basis points or a quarter percent. This will raise interest rates for loans. Interest rates on CDs, money markets, and savings accounts will go up slightly. The stock market while no one can predict exactly where it will go will likely trend higher. It is still the only game in town to get a return on your money since stable investments barely give 1 percent.
The fed is expected to raise two more times this year, so that is what the stock markets expect. The fed needs to raise rates so that in the future another recession occurs, they're able to cut interest rates to help support the economy. It's important that the fed continues to raise.

"Best life ever" ?????
by charity7 inis this a slogan that was recently come up with for jw's?
i've seen it used as a hashtag on instagram for jw's, key chains, cakes, about me biography description... the first thing i thought was, isn't that a little pretentious?
they complain so much about this life.

This is a phrase I believe was started to help ease the explanation for paradise never coming. In other words they came up with the phrase, even if paradise doesn't come, this is still the best life ever to live. It's really a mind game they're playing on themselves. They will say, I don't smoke, do drugs, have sex and catch disease, why would I want to have any other life? Oblivious to how many HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of people do this exact same lifestyle but aren't JWs. I always found it ironic that when you go to enough meetings and especially assemblies, all you hear about is how hard life is. How difficult things are, how much satan attacks them and so on.

The 26 Prophetic Failures of Watchtower’s Most Heralded Date, 1914
by FatFreek 2005 inbelow is a paste of the front of this, my recent, essay.
most jws, and lurkers here, have never really thought of the scope of watchtower's 1914 prophecy.
to them, 1914 was a simple one and done -- a mistake was made and it's been corrected.

I don't think 1914 will ever be a problem for the watchtower. They don't need or even use proof to make significant changes. For instance we went from a biblical generation of 80 years will not pass away to the overlapping generation with no scriptural proof, and everyone gobbles it up in excitement. There was an article criticizing opposers who said the FDS will the leaders and not the entire body of anointed remnant. The entire article showed scripture after scripture proving why the FDS was the remaining 144,000. Fast forward a few decades and it's changed to the very thing that opposers said it was with no scriptural proof. Witnesses gobbled it up.
Results don't really matter to the masses. People like to be preached to, it's what makes them feel good. Witnesses latch onto these changes and flip flops because it's the only changes they actually get to see in their lives. Since the Great Trib never comes and therefor no paradise, the next best things are all the new understandings and books. It brings renewed excitement and joy to their faith as if NOW this new book proves how close we are. Rinse, recycle, repeat.
So as it pertains to 1914. All they really have to do is say 1914 was actually the beginning of pangs of distress but not the begging of the last days as we once thought. Blah Blah Blah, the last days are either still to start in the future or started on any event they pick, lets pick 9/11/2001 for now. All the witnesses would gobble it up. Of course a few would recognize the absurdity and leave, but not many that it would even matter. When 1994 came and went, the watchtower has not have a down year after. 1914 will just become an important date but likely 1919 will become the important date with the appointment of the FDS. With no real time attached to it, witnesses will go on merrily growing old and waiting.
