there has been some discussion about what happens when someone of the jw persuasion is faced with "needing" blood.
what is the story on "giving" blood?
what is the feeling here?

Good to hear from you again.
I also am now an organ donor since leaving the JW's. It feels really good knowing that, in the event of my death, others can have the chance for life. I have yet to donate blood, but it is now on my "to do" list.
So sorry that your Mom shuns you...these circumstances always break my heart. Life is so short to shun those we love. I hope that everything works out for her. Take care.

Here is New Jersey we are in a watch and wait mode.
Took all the lawn furniture and bikes inside yesterday, just in case. Just hoping that the kid's trampoline (which is tied down) doesn't make wings and fly away.

one of the big issues affecting ex-jws is being shunned by their close relatives.
this can be especially painful for parents, children or siblings.
the jw relative may even make some exceptions to associate in the name of "necessary" business, but then later on their conscience "pricks" them, and they realize that they have pushed the envelope too much and they withdraw their association altogether ... or ... the society comes out with some article or the co comes to town, and manage to ding on some issue that make jws feel guilty about associating with df'd and da'd relatives.

Maybe it all comes down to how loyal the family member of the df'd person is to the society. If they are hardliners, then the counsel from the elders to not associate will be taken to the letter. But, if they tend to use their own conscience as their guide, I think that they will be more apt to disregard all the shunning advice and still have contact with their friends and relatives.

nine years ago today,,,,,,,my last baby was born , only to have been told for 3 weeks that he would not live but a few hours if that.
he had so many problems , and i had the best doctors working with me trying to save my life and his,,,,,,,still the news was the same everyday.......they said he wouldnt make it and they were sorry.
they told me to pic a name out for my baby boy, so that when the time came, arrangements could be made.

Isn't it great that we live in a time when there is the medical technology there to help those babies that otherwise maybe wouldn't have a "chance".

thunder called my sister today and she said the doctor said it would be as little as 48 hours before my mom passed away.
i am perplexed as to why they were giving her pain medication when she had no brain waves.
i do have to say that my two dysfunctional siblings are always able to hurt me even when i am not there.
My sincere condolences to you and your family, Shiela. What a hard time you are going through now.

i've been thinking about writing this letter since my other step son...sean...went to visit his dad at the beginning of the summer...the good jw dad saw his son for a total of 3 hours out of the week he was there.. bxxxy, my step son who is still a slave witness told sean...who is attending classes to become a catholic...that the catholic church taught that jw's will go to hell.
here's the letter i've finally responded with...i haven't sent it yet...you can make suggestions...which i can reject if i wish.. sean mentioned to me that you said something to him on his last visit that has me a little concerned.
ive thought long and hard about writing this letter and decided (finally) to go ahead and write it and send it.. .

I was a Catholic growing up and became a JW in my early twenties. I just wanted you to know that I have learned a few things from your post that I wasn't even aware of when I was a practicing Catholic----obviously not a very good one.
I don't know your family problems in detail....but the letter seems good to me....to the point but not overbearing.
If only the JW's would find "new light" on the shunning doctrine, so much heartache and pain would be spared.

When I arrived at work, someone told me about the towers being hit by a plane. We watched on tv as the first plane struck the tower...I remember saying, "OMG!, Osama didn't do enough damage the first time from the bottom, so now he has struck the top!" Mr. Shakita has a neice that worked across the street from the WTC...so I was immediately worried about her. Later, we were to find out that she was late going to work that day, and coming up from the subway saw the towers on fire and people jumping to their deaths on the pavement below. The person I worked for that day was a lawyer in downtown Manhattan a block away from the WTC towers. He was also late that day and on the train to work when the towers were struck. He immediately came home, and as I watched him approach the tv with his hands on his head saying over and over again, "Oh My God, Oh My God"....and then he collapsed on the couch in shock. His face is imbedded in my memory and I will never forget the look of disbelief and shock that I saw there. What I didn't know at the time was that, as he was watching the towers fall, he knew that his good friend was inside and he was watching him die. I went home myself after that and waited for word on our neice, since we thought originally that she worked in the towers themselves, not across the street.
It is such a sad, sad day.
