the crowd on the street (see photo) is now inside and the gallery is packed.. yesterday jehovah's witnesses presented a written legal argument - "objections to the administrative claim of the ministry of justice of the russian federation" - to the supreme court of russia which, in paragraph 254, argued that if the ministry for justice liquidates and bans the activities of jehovah's witnesses then this will force individual members to renounce or abandon their religion for fear of persecution.. download legal argument (russian).

For those interested....
The article has appeared in the Wednesday 5 April 2017 print edition of The Guardian Newspaper.
It appears, in a cut-down version compared to the web article, at the bottom of page 4.
Jehovah’s Witness group loses its bid to block sexual abuse inquiry
A Jehovah’s Witness congregation in Manchester has lost a legal attempt to block an investigation into its handling of allegations of sexual abuse, after failing to convince a judge that the inquiry amounted to religious discrimination.
Groups linked to the religion mounted a legal challenge to prevent the Charity Commission from starting two inquiries into allegations concerned with survivors of sexual abuse being forced to face their attackers at “judicial committees”.
The commission began a statutory inquiry into the Manchester New Moston congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 2014, after reports surfaced that a convicted paedophile, Jonathan Rose, was brought face-to-face with survivors of his abuse at a judicial committee.
The commission’s second statutory inquiry concerned the UK’s main Jehovah’s Witness charity, the Watch Tower Bible Tract Society of Great Britain , which oversees the UK’s 1,500 congregations and is believed to play a key role in deciding how abuse claims are handled.
WTBTS launched litigation, including an attempt to challenge in the supreme court the commission’s decision to start an investigation. The charity also fought, in the lower courts, against production orders obliging it to give the commission access to records showing how it handled the allegations, although in January it dropped its opposition to these requests.
Yesterday, at the upper tribunal of the tax and chancery division at the Royal Courts of Justice, in London, which hears appeals from the charity tribunal, Mrs Justice Asplin ruled that the lower tribunal had been “entitled to decide that there was no direct discrimination”.
The commission’s head of litigation, Chris Willis Pickup, said: “We regret public and charity funds [were] used on this litigation, but we will continue to defend robustly our legitimate role in investigating serious concerns about charities.”
BTW some nice subbing going on with the headline in the print edition - the online version was headlined: "Jehovah’s Witnesses congregation's efforts to block inquiry squashed"
dear all,.
it has been a while since my last update and i first of all wanted to reassure you that our inquiry into the watch tower bible and tract society and manchester new moston congregation of jehovah’s witnesses (mnmcjw) are still progressing.
as you can imagine we have gathered a large amount of evidence and we are now focused on analysing this information to ensure that we use it in the most effective way.. this is not to say that we will not accept any new evidence from anyone that wishes to provide it and i would once again like to thank all of you who have helped us in the past for the invaluable information you have provided.. secondly i wish to draw your attention to a press statement we will be making later today.

vorokhobino, russia — a dedicated pacifist who has never even held a gun, andrei sivak discovered that his government considered him a dangerous extremist when he tried to change some money and the teller “suddenly looked up at me with a face full of fear.”.
his name had popped up on the exchangalee bureau’s computer system, along with those of members of al qaeda, the islamic state and other militant groups responsible for shocking acts of violence.. the only group the 43-year-old father of three has ever belonged to, however, is jehovah’s witnesses, a christian denomination committed to the belief that the bible must be taken literally, particularly its injunction “thou shalt not kill.”.
Thank you for posting a link to this in depth article from the New York Times
Thought this was interesting:
In the case of Jehovah’s Witnesses, the putative extremism seems to derive mostly from the group’s absolute opposition to violence, a stand that infuriated Soviet and now Russian authorities whose legitimacy rests in large part on the celebration of martial triumphs, most notably over Nazi Germany in World War II but also over rebels in Syria.
Jehovah’s Witnesses, members of a denomination founded in the United States in the 19th century and active in Russia for more than 100 years, refuse military service, do not vote and view God as the only true leader. They shun the patriotic festivals promoted with gusto by the Kremlin, like the annual celebration of victory in 1945 and recent events to celebrate the annexation of Crimea in March 2014.

russian supreme court considers outlawing jehovah's witness worship.
the russian supreme court could declare the jehovah's witnesses an extremist organization in a wednesday hearing, a move that would lead to the seizure of the church's headquarters near st. petersburg and the outlawing of the group’s organized worship.. in advance of the hearing, international concern has grown.
Thank you for taking the time to post and provide a link to the Time magazine article
In 2015, the Russian Federation banned the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ website JW.org, and customs officials stopped shipments of Jehovah’s Witnesses’ Bibles, citing the possibility they were extremist literature.
Check out OrphanCrow's very interesting information regarding this:
Jehovah’s Witnesses are pacifists
No they're not - they're conscientious objectors - there's a differance
Jehovah’s Witness leaders have also asked their eight million members worldwide to write letters to Russia officials, including President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, to ask them to intervene.
As has been discussed here on numerous threads....
