  What triggered your awaking?

  i was listening to a radio show about a jw women who had been disfellowshiped , her daughter cut off all contact ,must admit at the time i thought so what.. then this man phoned up and explained he was disfellowshiped for asking about jws being ngo in the united nations during 90s till early 2000s when a newspaper exposed them , i still thought he's a apostate but looked it up found the article then found this forum and even more info..

  I'm the same as Jimmy Young and LHG - it was the 1995 generation change that first opened my eyes.

  The Watchtower mag that announced that change also had an article about child abuse. The article said something like 'if a child says Brother Creep abused him/her but Brother Creep denies it, then there's nothing you can do. You just have to wait on Jehovah.'

  The generation change made no sense. It only made sense if you considered the view that the Governing Body didn't know what the hell they were talking about and were just making it all up as they go along.

  And the child abuse article - I was 'in' but I could see this was wrong.

  I stayed with the JWs for another 11 years because 'where would we go?', etc.

  Greta Thunberg, Worse than Plague

  so greta thunberg thinks the world pollutes too much.

  specifically, the parts of the world that pollute the least and have the cleanest industries.

  she doesn't seem to care about india or china who are the biggest polluters by far.. "how dare they".

  @Recovering - I don't think Simon or anyone else on this thread is denying scientific evidence of pollution. Just read his last post carefully - he says reducing Carbon emissions is an important thing.

  I think I can identify three main issues with Greta Thunberg and her backers:

  1. People generally don't like being lambasted by a 16 year old kid.

  2. People are maybe wary about the politics of Thunberg's backers. From where I'm standing, it looks like Greta Thunberg and her backers are radical Left, Marxist or Cultural Marxist types. I'm very happy for people to prove me wrong.

  3. People are wary of this narrative that Thunberg is trying to spin, e.g. 'you stole my childhood!' <--- it doesn't pass the sniff test for a lot of people.

  Languages, Dialects, Accents

  just though i'd start a thread devoted to languages, dialects/sociolects and accents, with the idea being that posters can comment on any language, or dialect or accent of any language, on this thread.. any phrases, expressions or idioms that you find interesting are also welcome.

  first, the subject of english accents came up on another thread.. the british isles have many different types of accent (although many of the dialects may be dying out), and if i start to take a closer look, i can't help but see 'patterns' .... in received pronunciation of standard english, the letter r is pronounced initially, between vowels, and after consonants, e.g.

  red, arrow, break.

  Here are another two things about Gaelic that are odd:

  1. There are two different words in Gaelic that are translated into English as am/are/is, and these are tha and is.

  Tha is used when it describes a circumstance that can change. So:

  Tha mi sgith - I am tired. Tiredness changes, comes and goes.

  Tha is also used to form the present continuous:

  Tha mi a' taidhpeadh anns a Ghàidhlig a-nis - I am typing in Gaelic now.

  And the word is is used for circumstances that are fixed, e.g.

  Is mise Iain - I am John/Ian. For some reason, the emphatic form of mi (which is mise) is used with is.

  Is is often shortened to 's …

  'S mise Iain - I'm John/Ian.

  2. Gaelic doesn't actually have words for 'yes' and 'no'.

  If you want to answer a question in the affirmative you just echo the verb but in the positive form:

  A bheil thu sgith? - Are you tired?

  Tha - Yes.

  To answer in the negative: Chan eil - No.
  

  The full answer would be:

  Tha, tha mi sgith - Yes, I am tired.

  Chan eil, chan eil mi sgith - No, I am not tired.

  So, there are more forms of yes/no than in English.

  An toil leat biadh Innseanach? - Do you like Indian food?

  'S toil - Yes.

  Cha toil - No.

  Re this lack of straight yes/no, I think it's the same in all the other Celtic languages.

  Respect is earned, not demanded.

  This is obviously ridiculous because each individual breathes in oxygen and breathes out carbon dioxide.

  Gender dysphoria is not necessarily a mental condition, it can be physical. To be a mosaic or intergrade between the sexes is not something anyone would likely choose for themselves - you're confusing transgender people with intersex people, I think.

  Give them a bit of slack, people with gender issues have immense psychological problems to handle, which most of us can't imagine - generally speaking, they're getting a bit of slack.

  I believe in the freedoms we have in the West, including adults having autonomy over their own bodies.

  So, I fully accept people are free to have surgical operations on their bodies and identify how they choose.

  One issue here is that some places of work have become infected with the trans activist mind virus, and people are being compelled to address someone with that person's chosen pronouns. This is profoundly illiberal.

  Example: Caitlyn Jenner is free to transition and call herself a woman. And I'm free to either accept or reject that claim. I'm free to either call her a woman, or call him a man and use he, him, his. Freedoms cut both ways. <--- this is how free speech works.

  The OP's issue is ridiculous, if true. <---- Edit: just read the link and it says the person regrets being allowed to transition before adulthood. This is reasonable. Only adults should be allowed to transition.

  But, I'm gonna make a prediction: expect similar lawsuits in the coming years. Gender reassignment is still very new. We don't know how badly people can be damaged from having their bodies sliced n diced, and taking hormones for the rest of their lives.

  And here's an opinion that would get me in trouble on FaceBook or Twitter: I think the old fashioned way of treating people who suffer from gender dysphoria (recognising it as a mental problem, so psychological treatment) isn't as bad as mutilating an otherwise healthy human body and stuffing it with hormones.

  At least psychological treatment can be unravelled. OTOH, once a person 'transitions' there's no way back if, later down the line, they discover they're not actually transgender.

  my wife and i are not religious nor do we want to be.

  we are very set in our spiritual beliefs.

  we have worked with a jw who's family have been like a part of our family for 6 years.

  The following is a clip from the Australian Royal Commission into child abuse in religious organisations.

  The State Counsel, Angus Stewart, is questioning a JW elder called Kevin Bowditch.

  Please take the time to watch this clip.

  Stewart is talking about a JW person disfellowshipped for child abuse that can go on to harm non-JW children because the JWs just disfellowship (= excommunicate) the child abuser - no warnings are given to the wider community. This means a paedophile whose only crime is abuse of JW children can move on to kids in the wider community, with no warnings given to parents like you.

  Also, if no other people witnessed the child abuse (paedophiles typically abuse children in secret), then JWs do everything in their power to make difficult the lives of the investigating police.

  My question is, do you think they want to convert my children? - JW want to convert anyone.

  Their 'central administration' - the Governing Body - commands them to do exactly that.

  It isn't harmless.

  Whatever you do, don't let your kids go to JW meetings or have a bible study.

  Edit: as others have pointed out, the religion has a paedophile problem, so it may be best not to let your kids stay at a JW home.

  The religion requires at least two witnesses (not the religious kind, here I mean 'observers') to acts and allegations of child abuse. Obviously, child sex abusers tend not to want an audience. This means that there are many instances of child abuse that has essentially been covered up. This further possibly means that paedophiles thrive in the group, with the religion possibly becoming a magnet for sex offenders.
