  The origin of the name and masthead illustration of The Watchtower

  thanks to the great "watchtower history" blog with historical information about the pre- and early bible students years, i became today aware of the origine of the name the watchtower and the masthead illustration in front of the old magazines.. in c.t.

  russell's younger days, his mother and other relatives died and were buried on the family plot at the allegheny cemetery.. it must have been a defining moment voor the young ctr.

  look at his inspiration to choose the name and masthead of his magazine.

  Hey! It's all cool. And I don't take dislikes personally. Sometimes I fall short of expressing myself fully, but even if I don't and some people may dislike what I post, it's certainly more refreshing than the frozen smiles that you get surrounding yourself with a bunch of "yes" men at the Kingdom Hall!

  Seems to me that I remember somewhere in the book of Genesis a story about a bunch of men who gathered together to build a great and mighty TOWER (a WATCHTOWER perhaps?) And didn't Almighty God thwart their efforts and send them away packing with a bunch of different goofy religious viewpoints?

  Wow! Sounds kinda like the WatchTower that we all have come to know, doesn't it?

  And they actually have the nerve to use an image of this Tower (of Babel) as their logo!

  You know, I actually agree with you. Most anything can be viewed as a phallic symbol to somebody. Just like, you can find pagan origins in most anything if you choose to waste your time looking.

  To me, it's just the WT having their own reasoning thrown back at them. They want to make a big stink about Christendom's phallic symbols when they have their own phallic symbols plastered all over their own magazines.

  And, I could be wrong about this, but I believe the whole "steeple is a phallic symbol" thing was brought to their attention in a book called "The Two Babylons". A book that, while not published by the WT, was heavily endorsed and read by the WT back when my mother came into the "Truth" in the 60's.

  Anyone who wants to dislike my comment is certainly free to do so, but the fact remains that a watchtower is to a Kingdom Hall what a steeple is to a church. i wasn't trying to be funny by saying so.

  In the time I spent as a JW, they loved going around saying that a steeple is a phallic symbol. It wasn't until after the 9/11 attacks that I was watching a documentary which noted that tall buildings are phallic symbols. And TOWERS are phallic symbols. The twin towers were the most noted phallic symbols of the USA.

  And the tower pictured on WTB&TS serves the same purpose as a steeple on a church brochure.

  Also, as a side note, did you know that a watchtower, just like a church steeple, is a phallic symbol?

  Don't take the advice from Viviane too seriously. She loves to tear people down. It's just her thing. She is kinda the Joan Rivers of ex-JW's. Some people have a difficult time distancing themselves from the JW mindset.

  But, we all love her here. Her posts are highly entertaining!

  i know of coc, exiting the jw cult, mamas club, 30yrs a wt slave, and told ones were written by otwo, punk and terry.

  i'd like to spend some time making my way through them so titles, authors and links would be really useful.

  Stupid things JWs say

  ok we all say stupid things (probably on a daily basis in my case) but my mother (a jw) was told by another member that she doesn't have a conscience because anyone who smiles as much as she does simply can't have a conscience.

  i bet you can guess the person who said it to her has a face like a wet weekend.. i guess the reasoning is: if you had a conscience you wouldn't have much to smile about because you'd be overwhelmed with guilt and worry.

  what a load of old bollox that cult is eh?.

  No, that is not complete nonsense, and yes, it has happened - several times, to me! (And it's not always necessarily a good thing).

  For the sake of brevity, let me give you just one example. I had already left "the Truth" many years before. I started a new job. I had one manager in particular who was a real hot-head, angry, belligerent, foul mouthed, no body really liked him. He was a clean cut guy, well dressed, but what an arrogant ass hole!

  One night I went to the Cracker Barrel to eat and as I was leaving, I saw him dining at one of the tables with two women. I assumed that one of the ladies was his wife and the other may have been his mother or mother-in-law. But just looking at them I just knew "My God! He's a JW!!!"

  I can't explain it. I just knew. I did acknowledge him and said hello. I decided I would ask him point blank the next day at work if he was a JW.

  After sleeping on it, I chickened out. If I asked him that and he wasn't, that would really piss him off, and he could really make my job more difficult. So I just let it drop.

  About a year later I was talking to a co-worker and the subject of religion came up. He mentioned to me that there were several JW's who worked there. I asked him who, and guess who the first one he told me was???

  After about another year this particular JW was fired. He was making racist comments to other employees there.

  So, yes they do indeed stand out. And it's not always for the reasons they think!

  Did You Ever Hear a Non-Witness Opinion After They'd Attended Their first Meeting?

  i was about 12. i took a friend along to a meeting and he said he didn't mind learning stuff but it was a shame it was so boring.. i was about 14. i had my very own bible study and took him along.

  he just kept whispering about the girls there that he fancied.. i was in my early 20's.

  i took along a lady that i knew.

  When I was about 12 years old I remember my now ex-brother-in-law attending a Sunday meeting for the first time. His remark afterwards was, "I never experienced a religion that did nothing but bash other religions!"
