I found Jesus. Turns out, he was hidin' behind the couch the whole time!

First Christmas
by yxl1 inwhen we first left the dubs, we celebrated x-mas pretty much straight away, but had no decorations or tree, and only gave gifts to each other.
for some reason it just seemed wrong to put up decorations and we continued to celebrate this way for about 5 years.
we decided to put up decorations when it was my daughters 1st x-mas, and have never looked back.

Thanks, Gently Feral! We'll have to try some of these. Even more meaningful if we make it ourselves!

I have the same problem. I tend to call everyone punkin, rock-star, gorgeous, whatever. The sillier the better-they all think it's my special nickname just for them! I hope they never catch on, that could be embarrasing.

This'll be my first year to actually celebrate Christmas (since I was 9). Last year, we exchanged gifts, but didn't call it Christmas. I want to put up a tree this year! Something really sparkly, lots of lights. But, geez, the decorations are expensive, especially since we'll be starting from scratch. I've been dating my guy for 4 years now, and out of respect for my beliefs, he never did xmas either. But this year it just feels right. I hope I can remember the words to all the carols!

Hunny-Bunny was never JW. Currently he's vaguely Christian, but belongs to no church (coool!)

Lift that silly ban on deviant (anything other than missionary position between married folks, I guess!) sex. Also, start referring to God as She at least as often as He. Quit harboring child molesters and beaters. Encourage people to try new things (yoga, martial arts, rap music) before condemning them. Quit telling folks to spend their one day off all week knocking on stranger's doors to try to convert them. Accept the inherent worth of all creatures-even women! Let people smoke, iffen they wanna.
But then, it wouldn't be the Society, then, would it?

Polyester skirts and recipe cards
by joannadandy inahh yes.. eyegirl and i were taking that long dirty and shameful walk down memory lane.

the second school, and why it sucked monkey nostrils to be a sister back there giving a talk.. you would think, no sweat, smaller crowd, less pressure.

In our hall, the 2nd school was poorly ventilated. And hot. The smell of dirty diapers filled the air. The brother I was seeing on the sly (I taught him how to French kiss!) once got so flustered back there that he started to stutter, then dropped his notes and they got all out of sequence. There were a lot of them, because he'd left nothing to chance, just wrote the whole thing out word for word. He couldn't get them back in order, and got progressively more panicked, until finally the elder told him to just sit down. He later told me that it was the most frightening moment of his life-like a horrible nightmare! Timmy, if you're out there, please know that I still thought you were cool after that, and that all the loving brothers and sisters who giggled at your 3 minutes of terror were a bunch of jerks.

Child Abuse not grounds for divorce
by RevMalk ini've read, and heard that sexual child abuse is not grounds for divorce according to the watchtower.
can anyone help me in finding documented proof to that effect?
(or even not so documented is a start).

In my family's case, my mom was told by every elder she spoke to that since I did not have two witnesses to my stepfather's assaults on me, and he was denying it, officially it never happened, so she had no grounds for divorce. I caught hell for running away at 15, while he continued in good standing. This was, however, 19 yrs ago-they may have changed the rules since then.

Coming to the Dark Side
by Vita Nuova ini believe with certainty that the critical point when my de-programming from the jw mind-set began was when i was hired by my former boss and present friend of 9 years.
she was the most adorably human person i had ever met, yet she was a part of the world nonetheless.
i believe that our specific friendship began to infiltrate my conceptions about the world in a way that wasnt wholly evident to me.

My guide to the other side turned out to be the most amazing, funny, smart, bighearted individual I have ever known. I fell in love with him, and miracle of miracles, he fell for me, the dowdy sister! It's meant the loss of some (but not all) of my old JW friends, but it's been worth it! What amazed me the most was that he is not, nor did I become, evil people because we don't go to meetings or bang on people's doors on Saturday morning. We try to lead good lives, and I feel that God still loves us.
