our winter this year has been very strange.
it was very warm originally, then lots of snow... we had a really nice spell here, and now wham!
we're right in the middle of winter hell in the mountains, lol!
It does seem pretty harsh, now that you mention it. 2 weeks ago I came across a pigeon in a doorway that was so cold, he could not even fly away. He looked completely dumbstruck. I tucked him into my jacket for a few minutes, and he was recovered enough to fly away, but that was a first for me. In Maine, we have had bitter cold, lots of wind, and only like two real snowstorms.
You try to stay warm up there in the Arctic, ok? Try to focus on how close spring is. It is on it's way, honest.

No, I don't think people really change so much as they get older. Sure, we all evolve to a certain extent, but we remain the same basic person. Someone who was so fundamentally defective as to harm a child is not to be trusted with the next generation, in my opinion.
However, some survivors of child abuse have felt somewhat comfortable letting the grandparents see the kids while they (the parents) are present. Ultimately, you know them better than anyone, so trust your gut reaction.
i knew some parents who really beat the hell out of their kids.

Wow. This thread sure brings back some memories. My honey and I have decided never to have children, but we share the opinion that no one has the right to hit someone else in anger. Especially when the other person is a defenseless child.
I dream of being the sort of person who, when she sees a child being abused in public, hauls off and decks the parent. I could never actually do that, but it's an indication of the anger I feel towards those people.
Next time you raise a hand to your child, ask yourself how terrified you would be if someone four times heavier than you, and a hell of a lot stronger, were to start beating on you. Then, quit being so damned lazy that you try to solve problems with violence and intimidation, and try actually being a parent to your kids.

Never married, but a brother I was sort of dating slept with my best friend (a sister). When I found out and was REALLY upset, she ran to the elders and acted all contrite so she would not get df'd. I think they both got public reproof; she then called me up in order to bad mouth him, then he was trying to be my "friend", and finally I had reached the end of my patience and cut off all contact with both of them. It was such a tawdry little soap opera.

Avishai, I'm with you on this one. Metropolis was the coolest! It was supposed to be showing for 2 nights in Jan. at my local theatre, with a live piano player accompanying. It's been postponed until March, but you'd better believe I'll be there! Everybody should see Metropolis at least once on a big screen as Fritz Lang intended.

when you were in your hall, did you ever notice certain jws who kinda stood outside the circle of "loving association"?
what i mean by this is jws who never commented at meetings, never went out on field service, but seemed to just be left alone?.
i attended his funeral, but i was incredibly disappointed in it.
I have a feeling that most of us here were outcasts, whether because we knew we didn't fit in, or because the rest of the congregation could tell we were different somehow.
I knew one guy in New England who was like this. We went out a couple of times, but it was like dating my brother-great fun to be around, but no "spark". Months later, I heard that he'd left the "truth", and was suspected of being gay. Then, two years ago, my dear friend and landlord (who is gay) told me all about this wonderful guy he'd met and was going on a date with that night. Turns out, it was my friend! I was so happy for them both, but alas, they felt no spark, either. Oh, well.

I'm so sorry they're turning this into a hard time for you. However, assuming you're both adults, who you marry is your business, not your family's. If you give in just to placate them, you're setting yourself up for a lifetime of sacrificing your own happiness to them-DON"T DO IT!!!! If you love each other, marry her and let your family come to grips with it. They will, in time, trust me.
