Tell me about your favorite family restaurants.

my wife and i went out for breakfast this morning, as we usually like to do.. however, today we were in the mood for ham with our breakfast, so we hit our "ham" breakfast restaurant.

we have different restaurants we frequent depending on what we feel in the mood for eating.

this little restaurant is in a small town next to ours, on a side street, and if you didn't live in this town, you probably would never find it.

Moody's Diner, Waldoboro, Maine.

This place should be declared a national treasure. I don't think I've ever spent more than 20 bucks for two people, and most of the time it's far less. The food (Maine style cuisine) is all from scratch, always good. They've got stuff like pot roast, meatloaf, turkey dinner (real turkey, cut kinda sloppy off the bone.) THE BEST pies, chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting, homemade whoopies as big as your dang head. The waitresses call you deah (the Northern equivalent of hon.) Moody's has been open since the 1930's, I think. If you're ever in Maine, that's the place to go, though maybe not during tourist season, as it gets packed with loud people.

edited to add- Oh yeah, and they'll even make you up a plate of veggies and a biscuit if you don't eat meat!

Do men want to get married?

or is teh saying "why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free" really true.

call me cynical, i guess just because i've had so many guy friends.

I think that, as a group, men are less thrilled with the idea of marriage than are women. Sure, some guys want to marry, just as some women have no interest in the institution. Most of my friends are guys, and they tell me stuff. My partner is a guy, and he has this idea that marriage is unneccessary to seal our commitment; then he starts moaning about how guys always get shafted in the divorce and the woman runs off with all the money. I pointed out that my mom is 3X divorced and each time, her standard of living went down as she never saw all that money divorcees supposedly get.

Sometimes I think the whole no sex before marriage rule could really work to a woman's advantage in these situations.

under74, what was the deal on paisleys? I vaguely remember in the 80's we were told that no Christian would wear them, but they never told us why. I think the design is just a highly stylized representation of some kind of fruit. Could it be...demon fruit? Also, fleur-de-lis designs were bad, because they supposedly were symbolic of the trinity.

when i drive by in the mornings to take the hubby to work, i often see lexus, bmws, mercedes, caddies, audis, etc.

Last winter, I had a wisdom tooth grow in, which I hadn't realized they would do, at my age. It was a painful little monster gnawing through my soft pink gum tissue, and the side of my face occasionally swelled up. But it seems to have settled down now; it appears to have emerged as much as it's going to. The problem is, it's at a little bit of an angle, so sometimes when I talk I bite the inside of my cheek. But as long as it seems healthy, I plan to put off going to the dentist, because of dentist-phobia.

sKally- I had a different tooth extracted maybe three years ago. It wasn't so bad, but the sound it makes can be unnerving if you're not prepared for it. They gave me a bunch of pain pills (big white ones, all sorts of warnings on the label about their addictive nature.) I took one the first day, half of one the second day, then flushed them down the toilet because I was scared of becoming an addict. But the pain was really not so bad. You'll do fine.

Secret Santa 2005

How cool, I had a discussion about our secret Santa dealie-o just this morning. I was drinking my morning java out of a great coffee cup I'd received last xmas, and a guy asked me where I'd found it. So, I told him about the secret Santa exchange, and how fun it is for us here especially, as many of us are new to this whole xmas thing. Which led to a nice, low-key discussion of witness doctrine, disfellowshipping, etc. A sort of informal anti-witness.

So yeah, count me in. I'm pm-ing you my brand-new addy. We'll have to start a thread for cards as well, because that totally rocked last year.

I've always been partial to the entire Song of Solomon. Very nice use of euphemisms, all that stuff about the guy's loins being like a herd of strong bulls and whatnot...When I'm in the right mood, it's actually quite sexy. Although there is virtually no mention made of foreskins, that was a disappointing oversight, I thought.

From a true American patriot

people have made claims that i am anti-american for expressing dissatisfaction about american foreign policy or dismay at the ills of american socity.. to be honest, i do not think i am anti-american.

i think i am more pro american than many of the people in the country who like to wave flags and buy t-shirts but who seem happy to turn a blind eye when things are not right and happy to see it's ideals sold to the highest bidder.

imo the true patriots are those who are willing to stand up and take the flak for saying "this isn't good enough, we demand better".

As I've said before, I love my land and my people enough that it breaks my heart every time our government lets us down. So, I'm as likely to criticize the US govt. as anyone else. But it's true, Simon, that every once in a while, you seem to lose some of your usual diplomacy and tact when talking about the US, occasionally causing some hurt feelings. It may be helpful to realize that many of us don't agree with our government's policies and actions, and many of us don't consider that guy in office to be our leader. Often, we're just as horrified as you by what we see in the news. So, try to be clear who it is you're criticizing- the citizens, or the current regime.
